A wave of payments is currently reaching those who filed claims in last year’s class action lawsuit against Apple concerning Siri’s privacy practices. Reports are flooding in from Reddit users confirming funds are appearing in bank accounts and digital payment platforms over the past few days.
If you notice an unexpected deposit labeled “Lopez Voice Assistant” or something similar, rest assured – it’s legitimate. This marks the beginning of the distribution of the $95 million settlement designed to compensate users whose devices potentially recorded conversations without their explicit consent.
Claimants had the option to receive their compensation through direct deposit, electronic check, or a traditional paper check delivered by mail. Interestingly, some recipients are reporting funds arriving via a different method than they initially selected, so diligent monitoring of both bank transactions and physical mail is advised.
The settlement stemmed from a lawsuit alleging privacy violations related to Siri-enabled devices. The core issue revolved around concerns that devices were inadvertently activating and recording user conversations, raising significant privacy questions.
Initially, the proposed payout was $20 per eligible device – encompassing iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, Macs, HomePods, iPod touches, and Apple TVs – with a maximum of five devices per claimant. However, the final payout amount was adjusted to $8.02 per device, capped at a total of $40.10, due to the unexpectedly large number of participants.
Distribution is occurring in batches, meaning not everyone will receive their funds simultaneously. Patience is key, as it may take several days for the payment to appear. Keep a watchful eye on your accounts and mailbox during this period.
For those with specific questions or concerns regarding the settlement, a dedicated administrator is available by phone. You can reach them at 888-981-4106 and select option 0. Be prepared to potentially leave a message requesting a return call.
