BRAIN DRAIN EMERGENCY: NU's Bold Plan to RECLAIM Top Talent!

BRAIN DRAIN EMERGENCY: NU's Bold Plan to RECLAIM Top Talent!

A quiet revolution is underway in Philippine education, one focused not on grand pronouncements, but on keeping talent *home*. National University (NU) is deliberately building its workforce from within regional communities, a direct response to the country’s ongoing struggle with brain drain.

The numbers tell a compelling story. At NU Bacolod, a remarkable 96% of employees are local hires. That commitment extends – and even intensifies – across the network: NU Laguna boasts 99% local staff, and the newly opened NU Cebu operates with a perfect 100% local employment rate.

This isn’t an isolated trend. NU Baliwag reports 98% local hires, NU Dasmariñas 96% (with a small percentage of internal transfers), NU Lipa also at 98%, and NU Clark at an impressive 97%. A clear pattern emerges: NU is actively investing in the communities where its campuses are located.

Central to this strategy is a standardized salary matrix implemented nationwide. NU President and CEO Renato Carlos H. Ermita, Jr. explains this ensures competitive compensation, designed to both attract *and* retain skilled professionals within their home regions.

Beyond competitive pay, NU leverages its connection to the SM community to enhance accessibility and affordability for both employees and students. This creates a virtuous cycle, strengthening the local ecosystem and fostering economic growth.

The impact extends beyond individual careers. By prioritizing local employment, NU directly contributes to reducing the inequality gap between bustling urban centers and often-overlooked rural areas. It’s a deliberate effort to empower communities from within.

Strategic campus locations, often near major transportation hubs, further enhance convenience for both staff and the 84,000 students currently enrolled across NU’s 14 campuses. This thoughtful planning underscores a commitment to practical, real-world solutions.

NU’s reach is already substantial, spanning from its main campus and Nazareth School in Manila to locations in key cities like Pasay, Quezon City, Pasig, Calamba, and Lipa. But this is just the beginning.

Looking ahead, NU has ambitious plans to serve 100,000 students by 2027. This expansion includes the development of new campuses in Davao, Iloilo, and Urdaneta, each poised to become a local hub for education and opportunity.

The story of NU’s resurgence is itself remarkable. In 2008, when enrollment was flagging, the SM group stepped in, acquiring majority ownership and initiating a period of strategic revitalization. This investment has clearly paid dividends.

The success of NU is mirrored in the overall performance of its parent company, with recent reports indicating a 6% increase in consolidated net income, fueled by growth in banking, property, and retail sectors. This demonstrates a thriving synergy between education and broader economic development.
