CASINO SMOKE-IN: Iowa Lawmakers Just DOOMED Your Lungs!

CASINO SMOKE-IN: Iowa Lawmakers Just DOOMED Your Lungs!

A battle for cleaner air within Iowa’s casinos has stalled, as a proposed ban on smoking on gaming floors was effectively shelved this week. Senate File 2051, designed to eliminate a long-standing exemption in the state’s smokefree air law, met its end in a Senate subcommittee, indefinitely postponed without further consideration.

The bill aimed to strike a specific subsection of Iowa Code, one that currently permits smoking within casinos and racetracks. This exemption allowed these establishments to operate differently than other indoor public spaces, a distinction the legislation sought to erase, extending the same protections to casino workers and patrons as enjoyed elsewhere.

The proposed change would have encompassed a wide range of gambling facilities, including traditional casinos, excursion gambling boats, and even racetracks. It represented a direct challenge to the status quo, promising a more healthful environment for those who work and play within these venues.

While the Iowa proposal faltered, the fight for smoke-free casinos continues elsewhere. In New Jersey, casino workers recently received a significant boost in their ongoing legal challenge to the state’s smoking policies.

A case, previously dismissed, has been sent back to a trial court, offering casino employees another chance to argue that secondhand smoke poses an unacceptable risk to their health. The renewed legal momentum provides a fresh opportunity to overturn existing rules that still permit smoking on casino floors.

Advocates, including the group Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects (CEASE) and union representatives, passionately argue that no workplace should expose employees to the dangers of secondhand smoke. They believe a comprehensive ban is essential to protect the health and well-being of casino staff.

This setback in Iowa underscores the powerful forces at play – a complex interplay of economic interests, worker rights, and public health concerns – as the debate over smoking in casinos rages on across the nation. The fight is far from over, with advocates determined to create a healthier environment for all casino employees.
