Abbott DEMANDS CAIR Shutdown: Is Your Money Funding Extremism?

A political firestorm erupted in Texas as Governor Greg Abbott formally requested the state’s Attorney General investigate and potentially revoke the non-profit status of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). The governor’s demand, delivered in a sharply worded letter, seeks to prevent CAIR and its associated groups from operating within the state’s borders.

Abbott’s rationale centers on the assertion that CAIR poses a threat to Texas, alleging connections to organizations deemed dangerous under state and federal law. He specifically cited concerns about the Muslim Brotherhood and potential links to entities supporting terrorism, claiming these groups operate under a deceptive guise of charitable work.

The Attorney General’s office confirmed it is already actively investigating multiple school districts for their involvement with the Islamic Games of North America, an organization known to collaborate with CAIR. This investigation aims to determine if taxpayer funds are inadvertently supporting groups linked to terrorist organizations, a charge Attorney General Ken Paxton vowed to prevent.

This isn’t the first time Abbott has targeted CAIR; he previously urged school districts to sever all ties with the organization. He maintains that CAIR’s presence on public school grounds is legally untenable, given his claims about its affiliations and activities.

CAIR vehemently denies these accusations, dismissing Abbott’s actions as a politically motivated attempt to silence criticism. A spokesperson characterized the governor as “desperate” and accused him of targeting those who question U.S. policy regarding Israel.

The organization is actively fighting back, having already filed a lawsuit against Abbott to challenge what they describe as an unconstitutional attempt to suppress their chapter in Texas. They insist their focus remains on protecting civil rights and religious freedom for all Texans.

The controversy extends beyond the state level, with a House committee chairman recently referring CAIR’s California chapter to the IRS for scrutiny. This referral alleges misuse of taxpayer funds and potential violations of federal law, raising questions about the organization’s financial practices and compliance.

The core argument from critics is that tax-exempt status is a privilege reserved for organizations genuinely serving the public interest, not those suspected of supporting illegal activities or misleading government agencies. The unfolding situation promises a complex legal battle with significant implications for CAIR’s future in Texas and beyond.
