A chilling investigation is unfolding in Missouri, revealing allegations of years-long abuse inflicted upon two teenagers, now aged 13 and 14. The case centers on a property in Potosi, where authorities believe the children endured a horrific existence marked by violence, neglect, and relentless intimidation.
The disturbing details emerged late last year when the teenagers, desperate for help, reached out to a trusted adult. Charging documents paint a harrowing picture, alleging the children were cruelly punished – even locked inside a chicken pen – and subjected to orchestrated “fight nights.” These incidents reportedly involved being forced to physically harm each other, under the watchful eyes of adults, sometimes during birthday celebrations.
The abuse extended far beyond physical violence. Court records claim the teenagers were given drugs and alcohol, routinely denied basic necessities like food and shelter, and deliberately kept from education. Medical examinations revealed neither child could read or write, a devastating consequence of prolonged isolation and neglect. They were found severely underweight, their fragile bodies bearing the visible scars of their ordeal.
A climate of fear allegedly permeated their lives, silencing their pleas for help. Investigators report the suspects threatened the children with firearms, warning them of deadly consequences if they ever revealed what was happening. Episodes of abuse were compounded by being shot at with BB guns, creating an environment where escape felt impossible and reporting the abuse meant risking their lives.
The breakthrough in the case came when the teenagers, driven by hunger, approached an adult guardian seeking food. Recognizing their emaciated condition, the woman offered them shelter and, with the mother’s agreement, assumed custody. Authorities discovered a documented arrangement – a cell phone and service plan exchanged for taking responsibility for the children, formalized through a power of attorney.
Chantel Hayford, the children’s mother, now faces a litany of severe charges, including allegations of inappropriate sexual contact with one of the teenagers. She is accused of kidnapping, domestic assault, sexual abuse, endangering the welfare of a child, and abuse or neglect. These allegations remain unproven as she has yet to enter a plea.
Jerry Menees, also residing at the property, shares in the gravity of the accusations. He faces charges of kidnapping, endangering the welfare of a child, armed criminal action, and abuse or neglect. Both suspects were arrested on January 13th following a search of their Potosi home, the believed epicenter of the alleged abuse.
While the legal process unfolds, investigators are urging caution. Despite a social media profile portraying Hayford as a hardworking mother of five, authorities have refrained from commenting on its authenticity. Their unwavering priority remains the wellbeing of the teenagers as the case progresses through the courts, with further hearings anticipated in the coming weeks.
