$350K TAXPAYER CASH for a CONCERT?! Kingston's Tone-Deaf Spending EXPOSED!

$350K TAXPAYER CASH for a CONCERT?! Kingston's Tone-Deaf Spending EXPOSED!

Kingston is preparing to commemorate a decade since a night etched in Canadian music history: The Tragically Hip’s final concert. The event wasn’t just a performance; it was a national farewell, a collective outpouring of grief and gratitude for a band that defined a generation.

That 2016 concert, part of the Man Machine Poem Tour, resonated far beyond the walls of the K-Rock Centre. While thousands packed inside, an additional 25,000 gathered in Springer Market Square, united by a shared screen and a heavy heart, witnessing the poignant performance together.

The city itself played a crucial role in that shared experience, investing $150,000 in the sound and visual production that brought the concert to the square. Now, city officials are proposing a significant investment – up to $350,000 – to honor the anniversary with a series of events.

Planning is already underway, with a vision for a year-long celebration beginning in the spring of 2026. The initiative, a collaboration between city staff, Tourism Kingston, and the Downtown Kingston BIA, aims to capture the spirit of that unforgettable night through music, events, and community activations.

Details remain closely guarded as negotiations continue, but the anticipation is palpable. Organizers envision a program that will not only revisit the memories of 2016 but also create new experiences that celebrate the band’s enduring legacy.

The estimated total cost for the anniversary events is around $600,000, with organizers actively pursuing additional funding through grants, sponsorships, and the Municipal Accommodation Tax. The city council will review the funding request at their upcoming meeting, a pivotal step in bringing this tribute to life.

This isn’t simply a retrospective; it’s a recognition of a cultural moment that profoundly impacted Kingston and the nation. It’s a chance to remember, to celebrate, and to ensure the legacy of The Tragically Hip continues to inspire for years to come.
