GAMBLING CRISIS: Singapore Deploys Secret Weapon Against Worker Exploitation!

GAMBLING CRISIS: Singapore Deploys Secret Weapon Against Worker Exploitation!

A quiet crisis unfolds within Singapore’s migrant worker community, one often hidden behind the city’s gleaming facade. The struggle with gambling addiction, and its devastating consequences, has prompted a unique response: a network of trusted peers stepping forward to offer guidance and support.

The Singapore Police Force, in collaboration with the National Council on Problem Gambling, has expanded its C.a.N ambassador program – a vital initiative designed to reach those most vulnerable. These ambassadors, themselves migrant workers, are the frontline in a battle against a problem that can shatter lives and futures.

Becoming a C.a.N ambassador isn’t simply a matter of volunteering. Candidates undergo rigorous interviews and assessments, ensuring they possess the empathy and commitment needed for the role. A minimum of two years working in Singapore is also required, demonstrating a vested interest in the community’s well-being.

The training equips ambassadors with the knowledge to recognize problematic gambling behaviors and deliver crucial crime prevention advice, guided by the Casino Crime Investigation Branch. More importantly, they are empowered to connect their peers with essential support services, including the option of casino self-exclusion.

Recently, 46 ambassadors were formally recognized – 24 returning to their roles and 22 joining the ranks. This expansion builds upon the program’s foundation, established in 2022, and signifies a growing commitment to proactive intervention.

For Abul Bossain Tuhin, a four-year veteran of the program, the motivation is deeply personal. He recalls the heartbreaking sight of fellow workers weeping outside casinos after losing their wages, a scene that ignited his determination to make a difference.

“It’s really meaningful for me because so many of my fellow countrymen don’t know how to solve their problems,” Tuhin shared, highlighting the critical need for accessible and culturally sensitive support within the community.

The stakes are incredibly high. Law enforcement officials have witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of casino-related crimes on migrant workers. Arrests lead to repatriation, stripping individuals not only of their earnings but also of future opportunities to work and build a life in Singapore.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Eugene Wang expressed profound gratitude to the ambassadors, acknowledging the program’s power to prevent such tragedies. The initiative represents a shift towards a more compassionate and preventative approach, recognizing that genuine change comes from within the community itself.

This isn’t just about enforcing laws; it’s about safeguarding livelihoods, preserving dignity, and offering a lifeline to those struggling with a silent and destructive addiction. The C.a.N ambassadors are the embodiment of that hope, a testament to the power of peer support and a beacon of compassion in a challenging landscape.
