Murder suspects among 8 inmates who escaped Louisiana jail; manhunt launched

A chilling silence shattered the pre-dawn calm in northeast Louisiana Friday morning. Eight inmates, including individuals accused of brutal crimes, vanished from the Riverbend Detention Center, igniting a massive manhunt that has gripped the region in fear.

The first alarm sounded at 1:20 a.m. when a headcount revealed the shocking absence of these “violent offenders.” Authorities immediately launched a search, but the initial hours yielded only partial success, with three of the escapees – Hugo Molino, Trenton Taplin, and Savon Wheeler – quickly apprehended.

However, five dangerous fugitives remain at large: Destin Brogan, 22; Kelin Looney, 21; Krisean Salinas, 21; Kevin Slaughter, 25; and Koplelon Vicknair, 19. Each represents a significant threat to public safety, and the urgency to locate them is paramount.

The gravity of the situation prompted swift action from the state’s highest legal authority. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has pledged the full resources of her office, including the specialized Fugitive Apprehension Unit, to assist in the capture of these individuals.

The Louisiana State Police Detectives–Monroe Field Office has now taken the lead in the investigation, relieving the East Carroll Parish Sheriff’s Office of primary search duties. While the sheriff’s office continues to support the effort, the state police’s expertise is considered crucial.

A stark warning has been issued to the public: “Do not approach under any circumstances.” Anyone who believes they have spotted one of the escapees, or possesses information regarding their whereabouts, is urged to contact law enforcement immediately. Their safety, and the safety of the community, depends on it.

Details surrounding the escape remain shrouded in mystery. Authorities have released no information regarding how the inmates managed to breach security, fueling speculation and anxiety among residents.

The backgrounds of the fugitives paint a disturbing picture. Taplin is accused of first-degree murder and attempted murder, while Brogan and Looney both face second-degree murder charges. Vicknair was awaiting sentencing in connection to a 2023 homicide, adding another layer of concern.

The search continues relentlessly, with every available resource dedicated to bringing these dangerous individuals back into custody. The community holds its breath, hoping for a swift and safe resolution to this unfolding crisis.
