JUDGE'S SHAMEFUL PLUNDER: They Stole From The Helpless!

JUDGE'S SHAMEFUL PLUNDER: They Stole From The Helpless!

A chilling betrayal of trust has shaken the foundations of Michigan’s legal system. A federal indictment reveals a stunning alleged scheme, where those sworn to protect the vulnerable instead allegedly exploited them for personal enrichment.

At the center of the accusations is Judge Andrea Bradley-Baskin of the 36th District Court, along with three others: attorney Avery Bradley, his daughter and fellow attorney Nancy Williams, and Dwight Rashad, a group home operator. Prosecutors allege a years-long conspiracy to systematically steal from individuals deemed incapable of managing their own affairs – the very people the court was designed to safeguard.

The indictment paints a disturbing picture of calculated greed. Allegedly, funds meant for wards – individuals under court protection – were diverted for personal luxuries and illicit gains. The amounts are staggering, totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Among the most shocking allegations: Judge Bradley-Baskin is accused of using $70,000 in a ward’s money to purchase a stake in a local bar. Another instance details $203,000 from a ward’s legal settlement allegedly split between three of the defendants, leaving the ward with nothing.

The scheme allegedly extended to fraudulent billing practices. Williams is accused of paying Rashad rent for wards who never even resided in his facilities, creating a phantom income stream funded by vulnerable individuals. Further, Bradley-Baskin allegedly leased a new Ford Expedition for two years using stolen estate funds.

The indictment details how Guardian and Associates, an agency owned by Williams and appointed by the Wayne County Probate Court as a fiduciary for over 1,000 incapacitated adults, allegedly served as a key instrument in the conspiracy. Avery Bradley and Andrea Bradley-Baskin’s law firm frequently represented the agency in probate court, creating a network of influence and opportunity.

Federal authorities are resolute in their condemnation of the alleged actions. One official stated the case represents a “grievous abuse of public trust,” emphasizing the betrayal inherent in exploiting those under the court’s protection.

Investigators emphasized that no position of power shields anyone from accountability. The alleged crimes represent a deliberate and calculated theft from some of society’s most vulnerable citizens, a violation of the fundamental principles of justice and care.

The FBI and IRS are committed to pursuing those who prey on the vulnerable, promising swift and decisive justice for the victims. The investigation, sparked by concerns raised by the Wayne County Probate Court, underscores the importance of vigilance and collaboration in safeguarding the rights of those who cannot protect themselves.

The allegations are a stark reminder that even within the halls of justice, corruption can take root. The pursuit of justice for these victims will undoubtedly send a powerful message: exploiting the vulnerable will not be tolerated.
