Imagine gliding through airport security, not fumbling for your ID, but simply walking through – your face acting as your boarding pass. This isn’t a futuristic fantasy; it’s the reality of TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, and it’s rapidly expanding across the nation’s busiest airports.
For those enrolled in TSA PreCheck, or who receive its benefits through Global Entry, a new level of convenience is now available. But it requires a proactive step: opting in. The process is surprisingly simple, beginning within your airline’s frequent flyer profile.
Recently, preparing for a flight out of Newark, I navigated the United app and located the “TSA PreCheck and travel documents” section. A straightforward prompt led me to upload a photo of my passport and formally consent to the facial identification program. Once completed, the door to touchless security was unlocked.
This isn’t a limited rollout. The five largest U.S. airlines are partnering with the TSA to bring Touchless ID to a growing number of major hubs, transforming the travel experience for millions. The program is designed to streamline the process, reducing wait times and adding a layer of modern efficiency.
Currently, American Airlines offers the service at an impressive 21 airports, including Boston, Dallas/Fort Worth, and New York’s JFK and LaGuardia. Delta Air Lines boasts an equally extensive network, covering hubs like Atlanta, Detroit, and Los Angeles.
United Airlines is also heavily invested, with Touchless ID available at 21 airports, including Chicago O’Hare, Denver, and San Francisco. Southwest Airlines participates at 17 locations, and Alaska Airlines at 16, further expanding the program’s reach.
To be clear, availability depends on both your airline and the specific airport. A quick check within your airline’s app is the best way to confirm if Touchless ID is an option for your upcoming travel. The TSA anticipates expanding the program to 65 major hubs by spring, promising even greater accessibility.
Despite this technological advancement, a crucial reminder remains: always carry a valid Real ID or an acceptable alternative, like a passport. Technology isn’t infallible, and having a physical ID ensures a smooth journey, even if unexpected issues arise. It’s a simple precaution that can save significant time and stress.
The future of airport security is here, offering a glimpse into a more seamless and efficient travel experience. By embracing these advancements and remaining prepared, travelers can navigate the skies with greater ease and confidence.
