NATION ERUPTS: Schools Under SIEGE!

NATION ERUPTS: Schools Under SIEGE!

A wave of protest is building, spearheaded by student groups at the University of Minnesota, calling for a “National Shutdown” to challenge federal immigration enforcement. The movement has quickly attracted support from activist networks across the nation, signaling a broadening of its initial scope.

The University of Minnesota’s Black Student Union is at the forefront, utilizing social media to galvanize participation. Their message is stark: a complete cessation of normal activity – no work, no school, and no shopping – as a demonstration of collective resistance.

The protest is fueled by outrage over the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, individuals the groups attribute to the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Protesters believe a nationwide disruption is the only path toward achieving what they define as justice for these and other victims.

Beyond the Black Student Union, a coalition of cultural and labor groups within the university are lending their support. The Somali, Ethiopian, and Liberian Student Associations are among the endorsers, demonstrating a diverse base of concern.

The Graduate Labor Union at the University of Minnesota has also formally backed the “National Shutdown,” adding another layer of organized labor to the growing movement. This endorsement suggests a wider critique of immigration policies and their impact on workers.

The core demand of the protesters centers on defunding ICE, framing the agency as directly responsible for harm and injustice. Their strategy relies on economic disruption to amplify their message and pressure policymakers.
