A critical hurdle stands between Bicol International Airport and its full potential: limitations imposed by transmission line issues. The Department of Transportation has now issued a directive to unlock the airport’s capabilities, aiming for a future welcoming international flights.
Between P200 million and P300 million will be allocated by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines to directly address these power line obstructions. This substantial investment signals a commitment to resolving a problem that has, until now, restricted the airport’s operational capacity.
The airport’s 2,500-meter runway is fully capable of handling jet aircraft, a key requirement for international service. However, realizing this potential hinges on overcoming the existing infrastructure challenges and optimizing the runway for full utilization.
Acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating the goal is to complete the necessary work within the year. Securing the funding from CAAP is the immediate priority, paving the way for a significant upgrade to the airport’s infrastructure.
A memorandum of agreement has already been established with the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines, demonstrating a collaborative approach to resolving the transmission line issue. This partnership is essential for safely and effectively removing the obstructions impacting the runway.
Once resolved, the airport will be able to fully leverage its runway length, opening doors to both jet operations and the long-awaited arrival of international flights. This upgrade promises to transform Bicol International Airport into a vital gateway for the region.
