For years, Nvidia’s G-Sync technology was synonymous with premium gaming monitors, promising a flawlessly smooth visual experience. But the technology’s reach has quietly expanded, moving far beyond the traditional desktop setup. What began as a monitor-exclusive feature now breathes new life into gaming on laptops and even televisions.
The core benefit of G-Sync lies in its ability to eliminate screen tearing, a distracting visual artifact that plagues fast-paced games. When your computer’s frame rate struggles to match your monitor’s refresh rate, tearing occurs. G-Sync dynamically adjusts the display’s refresh rate to precisely match the frames being rendered, resulting in fluid, uninterrupted gameplay.
Samsung has now announced that all of its new OLED displays – encompassing both the Odyssey gaming monitor line and their OLED televisions – will be compatible with G-Sync. This compatibility is particularly significant because the latest iteration of G-Sync no longer requires specialized hardware within the display itself, offering greater flexibility.
Specifically, Samsung’s 2026 Odyssey OLED gaming monitors and select OLED TVs (S85H, S90H, and S95H models showcased at CES 2026) will support the technology. These TVs boast refresh rates ranging from 120Hz to a stunning 160Hz, maximizing the impact of G-Sync’s synchronization capabilities.
The lines between traditional gaming setups and living room entertainment are blurring. More and more PC gamers are opting to connect their rigs to larger TVs, seeking an immersive experience previously reserved for dedicated gaming spaces. This trend is fueled by the rise of portable gaming devices like the Steam Deck, which effortlessly transform into big-screen gaming consoles when docked.
The anticipated release of a second-generation Steam Machine, equipped with an AMD GPU and utilizing AMD’s FreeSync technology, is poised to further accelerate this shift. As PC gaming becomes increasingly accessible on larger displays, the demand for technologies like G-Sync and FreeSync will only continue to grow, reshaping how we experience games.
