Chaos erupted during Monday morning’s commute as a disabled train ground travel to a halt near Toronto’s Union Station, triggering delays stretching up to two hours for GO Transit riders.
Repair crews immediately descended upon the scene, but the severity of the issue meant a complete standstill for rail traffic in the area, with potential trip cancellations looming large.
Passengers heading into Union Station were urgently advised to seek alternative routes, with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) presented as the most viable option to navigate the disruption.
The ripple effect wasn’t limited to GO Transit; the Union Pearson Express (UP Express) also suspended train service to and from Pearson Airport, stranding travelers and adding to the mounting frustration.
UP Express swiftly implemented an express bus service connecting Union Station with the airport, while advising passengers at other stations to utilize the TTC to complete their journeys.
This incident arrives on the heels of weeks of mounting criticism directed at the recently launched Finch Light Rail Transit (LRT) line, plagued by a series of operational challenges.
Complaints have flooded the TTC regarding the 10-kilometre LRT, citing persistent mechanical failures, frustratingly slow travel times, and the frequent need for replacement shuttle buses.
The Finch LRT’s troubled launch is further compounded by significant delays and cost overruns, opening two years behind schedule and exceeding its initial budget by a staggering $1.2 billion.
