MANZANILLO EXPLODES: Asia's Trade Lifeline Shatters Records!

MANZANILLO EXPLODES: Asia's Trade Lifeline Shatters Records!

The bustling Port of Manzanillo, Mexico has quietly reached a monumental milestone: exceeding 12 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) handled since its inception. This achievement underscores the terminal’s increasingly vital role in connecting Mexico with the surging trade currents of Asia.

The engine driving this growth is a dramatic increase in imports from Asia, particularly China. Over the last four years, these imports have surged by over 70%, transforming Manzanillo into a crucial gateway for goods destined for Mexico’s thriving production hubs.

Recent performance figures reveal a continued upward trajectory. In 2025, the terminal experienced robust growth, with import volumes climbing 10.5% and export volumes increasing by 12.5% – a clear indication of its expanding influence.

This success hasn’t happened by chance. Since 2023, over $300 million has been strategically invested in Phase 3A and 3B expansions, dramatically increasing both yard and berth capacity. This investment is coupled with the introduction of cutting-edge specialized equipment.

The total commitment to Manzanillo’s development now stands at an impressive $900 million. This substantial investment is designed to not only enhance the terminal’s capacity but also solidify its position as a key player in global trade.

“Reaching the 12-million TEU mark confirms we are on the right path,” stated a company executive, emphasizing the timing as the final stages of the expansion project are completed. “This milestone prepares us to operate with a capacity exceeding 2 million TEUs annually.”

Even after completing the major Phase 3 expansion, the commitment to improvement continues. Infrastructure and operational capabilities are being relentlessly bolstered, ensuring the terminal remains at the forefront of efficiency and innovation.

Today, the terminal boasts 1.3 kilometers of operational berths, equipped with state-of-the-art quay cranes reaching up to 60 meters and advanced hybrid rubber-tired gantry cranes. This allows Manzanillo to accommodate massive vessels.

These advancements enable the handling of ships stretching up to 400 meters in length and capable of carrying an astounding 24,000 TEUs. This capability is critical for meeting the demands of increasingly large container ships.

Looking ahead, the vision for Contecon Manzanillo is one of sustained investment. Future plans focus on infrastructure, technology, and talent development, all geared towards strengthening Mexico’s position in international trade. The port currently handles nearly 70% of all Asian imports entering the country via the Pacific.
