The first moments of captivity are often the most revealing. Newly obtained video captures Michael McKee, the surgeon accused of a double homicide, as he entered the Franklin County Corrections Center on January 20th. The footage offers a chilling glimpse into the composure of a man facing grave accusations.
McKee, 39, arrived after being extradited from Illinois, where he was initially apprehended following a multi-state search. He walked calmly through the booking area, seemingly unfazed, wearing a light blue jacket and dark blue pants, his hands appearing to be restrained by handcuffs.
A standard pat-down search followed, and McKee exchanged his civilian clothes for the standard-issue jail attire: a blue T-shirt and red shorts. He continued to move with a quiet demeanor, offering little indication of the turmoil surrounding the charges against him.
The accusations against McKee are devastating. He stands accused of the premeditated murder of his ex-wife, Monique Tempe, and her husband, Dr. Spencer Tepe, within their Columbus, Ohio home between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. on December 30th.
Investigators zeroed in on McKee after tracing a vehicle to the Tepes’ neighborhood around the time of the murders. The car’s path indicated its arrival shortly before the killings and its departure immediately afterward, ultimately leading authorities to Rockford, Illinois, and McKee himself.
Evidence continued to mount as police recovered several weapons from McKee’s property. A preliminary connection was established between one of those firearms and the deadly shooting, further solidifying the case against him.
The tragic discovery was made by a friend who performed a wellness check after being unable to reach the couple. The friend’s harrowing account revealed a scene of unimaginable violence: “He’s lying next to his bed, off of his bed in this blood.”
Remarkably, the couple’s two young children were found unharmed within the home, spared from the horrific violence that claimed their parents’ lives. The scene painted a picture of a peaceful family life shattered in an instant.
Court records reveal a brief marriage between Monique and McKee, beginning on August 22, 2015, and ending after just seven months with a divorce filing citing “incompatibility.” McKee was a resident at Virginia Tech Carilion Clinic at the time.
Ironically, the couple had been preparing to celebrate their five-year wedding anniversary just one month before the fatal shooting, a poignant detail highlighting the abrupt and tragic end to their story.
McKee has pleaded not guilty to four counts of aggravated murder with firearm specifications and aggravated burglary. The charges include allegations of using an automatic firearm or silencer in three of the murder counts, and brandishing a gun in the fourth.
