Singapore had always been a shimmering point on my travel map, a city-state perpetually on the horizon. Finally, with a trip to Japan looming, the opportunity arrived – a chance to experience the legendary hospitality of this island nation. My home for a few precious nights? The St. Regis Singapore, a landmark hotel recently transformed.
The renovation wasn’t merely cosmetic; it was a reimagining. Each of the 299 guest rooms now whispers of the nearby Singapore Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Subtle botanical motifs dance alongside rich, natural woods, and a palette of blues and greens evokes the serenity of Singapore’s famed parks. Floor-to-ceiling windows, opening with a touch, flooded the space with light and offered breathtaking views.
My suite’s bathroom felt less like a functional space and more like a private sanctuary. A deep soaking tub, mirrored surfaces, and a stunning floral-tiled floor combined with earth-toned marble to create an atmosphere of opulent calm. Modern technology seamlessly integrated, offering effortless control over lighting, curtains, and convenient charging for devices.
Despite the extensive changes, the heart of the St. Regis experience remained untouched: its legendary butler service. Attentive and discreet, the butlers anticipated every need, from unpacking luggage and delivering fresh coffee to pressing garments and ensuring the morning newspaper arrived promptly.
A new culinary gem, Sophia, has emerged within the hotel. This modern Italian restaurant, led by Chef Angelo Sergio from Puglia, Italy, is a feast for both the eyes and the palate. I savored a three-course lunch – a delicate burrata with baked tomatoes, a rich and satisfying rigatoni alla carbonara, and a delightful baba napoletano with limoncello and strawberries.
Yan Ting, the hotel’s Cantonese restaurant, also received a stunning makeover. A striking new entrance leads to a moody dining room adorned with brass, onyx, and marble, complemented by exquisite Chinese paintings representing the seasons. The food, already renowned, continues to delight with innovative dishes like wok-fried lobster angel hair pasta with truffle.
For a respite from Singapore’s heat, the hotel’s rooftop pool offered a tranquil escape. Surrounded by lush greenery and comfortable lounge chairs, it felt like a secluded resort oasis amidst the bustling city. It was the perfect place to unwind and recharge.
The St. Regis Singapore isn’t just a hotel; it’s a gallery. An immaculate private art collection graces the halls, featuring everything from large-scale paintings to captivating sculptures, including a breathtaking chandelier inspired by the Titanic and its ill-fated owner, John Jacob Astor IV.
The St. Regis Bar, a signature of the brand, has been beautifully updated. The new space evokes the sophisticated ambiance of Manhattan, with a cocktail menu that blends Singaporean flavors with New York classics. The Golden Sand Sour, a unique concoction with salted egg yolk and white miso, was a particular highlight.
The hotel’s central location is a significant advantage. A short walk leads to the serene Singapore Botanic Gardens and the vibrant National Orchid Garden. Public transportation, world-class shopping, and diverse hawker centers are also easily accessible.
The Remede Spa has been reimagined, drawing inspiration from The St. Regis New York’s iconic Iridium Room. Light, airy hues, delicate florals, and a soothing atmosphere create a haven of relaxation. Jacuzzis, steam rooms, and saunas complete the experience.
This wasn’t simply a renovation; it was a revitalization. The St. Regis Singapore has emerged with a renewed sense of elegance and sophistication, solidifying its position as a premier destination in The Lion City. It was, without a doubt, a home away from home I won’t soon forget.
