A tense confrontation unfolded during a House Financial Services Committee hearing on Wednesday, as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent testified before the panel. The exchange quickly escalated, revealing a deep ideological clash and a startling lack of decorum.
Bessent, serving as Chairman of the Financial Stability Oversight Council, began to address the pressures on the American housing market. He pointed to a significant factor contributing to rising costs: the increased demand created by a substantial influx of immigrants.
“Ten and twenty million immigrants took the housing stock of working Americans…” Bessent stated, attempting to lay out his reasoning. Before he could fully articulate his point, however, he was abruptly cut off by Representative Maxine Waters, the committee’s Ranking Member.
In a moment that stunned observers, Waters demanded Bessent “shut up.” The outburst was immediate and forceful, silencing the Secretary mid-sentence and disrupting the formal proceedings of the committee.
