Senator Bernie Sanders, a prominent voice against wealth inequality, spent over half a million dollars on private jet travel in the last year, according to a detailed review of campaign finance records. The expenditures raise questions about the consistency of his public criticisms of the wealthy and his own travel choices.
The spending occurred while Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez were embarking on a nationwide “Fight Oligarchy” tour, a series of rallies aimed at denouncing the concentration of power and wealth in the hands of a few. The bulk of the private jet expenses were incurred during the same period as these events.
Photographic evidence surfaced earlier this year showing Sanders boarding a luxury Bombardier Challenger jet in California, with Ocasio-Cortez also observed using the same aircraft. This particular jet boasts a spacious cabin designed for “superior comfort,” and can cost upwards of $15,000 per hour to operate.
Federal Election Commission filings reveal at least $354,000 was directly paid to Ventura Jets for these private flights. Additional funds were allocated to other private aviation companies, including N-Jet and Cirrus Aviation Services, known for prioritizing “luxury, comfort, and safety.”
Sanders defended his use of private jets last year, stating they were essential for maintaining a demanding campaign schedule. He argued that commercial travel would be impractical, preventing him from reaching large audiences. “That’s the only way to get around,” he asserted, offering no apology for the practice.
This isn’t an isolated incident. During his 2020 presidential run, the Sanders campaign spent over $1.9 million on private jet travel, utilizing companies like Apollo Jets and the Advanced Aviation Team. The pattern reveals a consistent reliance on private aviation throughout his campaigns.
The reliance on private jets is particularly striking given Sanders’ outspoken support for the Green New Deal and his warnings about climate change as an “existential threat.” Reports indicate private jets can generate up to fourteen times more pollution than commercial flights.
Ocasio-Cortez herself has previously condemned the use of private jets, questioning the necessity of such extravagance for corporate leaders. This creates a stark contrast with her own travel arrangements alongside Sanders on the “Fight Oligarchy” tour.
Beyond jet travel, Ocasio-Cortez also spent over $53,000 on luxury and “boutique” hotels during the same period, including stays at upscale establishments in cities where rallies were held. These expenditures further fuel questions about the alignment of their actions with their stated principles.
Requests for comment from both Sanders’ office and Ocasio-Cortez’s representatives regarding these expenses went unanswered. The spending has already drawn criticism, with some observers pointing to a clear hypocrisy in their public messaging and private behavior.
The situation has ignited a debate about the standards to which public figures should be held, and whether their personal choices should reflect the values they champion. It raises a fundamental question: can those who decry wealth and privilege justify utilizing its most visible symbols?
