MANILA WATER: POWER UP! Entire City Now Runs on 100% Renewable Energy!

MANILA WATER: POWER UP! Entire City Now Runs on 100% Renewable Energy!

A groundbreaking shift has occurred in the Philippine water sector. Manila Water, a leading utility provider, has fully transitioned the power source for its major East Zone facilities to 100% renewable energy – a first for the nation’s water industry.

This monumental change stems from a strategic partnership with AdventEnergy, the retail electricity arm of Aboitiz Power Corp. The agreement signifies a powerful commitment to drastically reduce Manila Water’s environmental impact and embrace a sustainable future.

Roberto Locsin, President and CEO of Manila Water, expressed immense pride in the collaboration. He emphasized the profound impact this decision will have on customers, knowing their water service is now powered by clean, renewable sources.

The renewable energy supply will directly fuel operations across Metro Manila and Rizal province, encompassing the entirety of Manila Water’s East Zone. This ensures a substantial reduction in carbon emissions for a significant portion of the population.

Beyond the East Zone, Manila Water is extending its commitment to sustainability. Business units in Cebu, Tagum, Calbayog, Laguna, and other regions will now receive a 20% renewable energy mix, furthering the company’s overall green initiatives.

James Yu, President of AdventEnergy, highlighted the synergy between this partnership and Manila Water’s core mission. Providing essential infrastructure now includes a dedication to building resilient economies and enhancing the quality of life for communities served.

This collaboration, initiated in 2023, directly supports the Philippine government’s ambitious renewable energy agenda and national decarbonization goals. It represents a tangible step towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy landscape.

Manila Water also strategically leveraged the government’s expanded Retail Aggregation Program (RAP). By consolidating the power demand of its ten wastewater facilities, the company gained access to more competitive rates in the retail electricity market.

RAP allowed Manila Water to function as a single, larger customer, unlocking opportunities for greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness while simultaneously pursuing its sustainability objectives. This innovative approach demonstrates a commitment to both environmental responsibility and operational excellence.

Manila Water’s service area encompasses a vast and vital region, including key portions of Metro Manila – Marikina, Pasig, Makati, Taguig, and more – as well as numerous towns throughout Rizal province. This transition to renewable energy will benefit millions of residents and businesses.
