DoT HEAD ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK?!

DoT HEAD ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK?!

Whispers of a potential cabinet shake-up reached the halls of power this week, fueled by speculation that Philippine Sports Commission Chair Patrick Gregorio might soon be trading his role in athletics for the responsibilities of Tourism Secretary. However, the Palace swiftly moved to quell the rising tide of rumors.

According to a statement from Palace Press Officer Clarissa Castro, discussions regarding a replacement for current Tourism Secretary Ma. Christina Frasco are, as of now, nonexistent. The denial comes at a sensitive time, as Secretary Frasco navigates a growing controversy surrounding the Department of Tourism’s promotional campaigns.

The core of the issue lies in the prominence given to Secretary Frasco herself within the promotional materials, overshadowing the very destinations the campaigns aimed to highlight. This sparked criticism and ultimately led to a Senate inquiry into the matter.

Facing the scrutiny, Secretary Frasco stated she had already directed regional offices to cease using promotional materials featuring her image, a move intended to refocus attention on the Philippines’ diverse attractions. The directive signals a response to the concerns raised by lawmakers and the public.

Despite the controversy and a sluggish recovery in tourism numbers, the President continues to express confidence in Secretary Frasco’s leadership. This support comes even as the nation grapples with visitor numbers that haven’t yet returned to pre-pandemic levels.

Current data paints a cautious picture of recovery. International arrivals are projected to reach approximately 5.9 million in 2025, a significant distance from the 8.3 million visitors welcomed in 2019. Even current year levels are only slightly improved.

A particular weakness has been observed in arrivals from South Korea, a traditionally strong source market. While visitors from the US, Japan, and Australia offer some support, they haven’t been enough to fully offset the decline.

Looking ahead, government officials are pinning their hopes on a series of strategic initiatives. These include streamlining visa processes, expanding international flight connections, and increasing investment in marketing efforts, all aimed at reaching a target of 6.7 million arrivals by 2026.
