FRAYNA STUMBLES, BUT STILL DOMINATES! Canino's SHOCKING Rise!

FRAYNA STUMBLES, BUT STILL DOMINATES! Canino's SHOCKING Rise!

The tension in Malolos, Bulacan was palpable as Janelle Mae Frayna fought to a draw against Maria Lavandero, maintaining her lead in the Philippine National Women’s Chess Championship. Every move in their 40-move, Alekhine duel felt critical, a testament to the high stakes and fierce competition.

Frayna’s draw secured her position at the top with five points, a full point ahead of a determined group of challengers. The championship is far from decided, however, as a resurgence from Ruelle Canino injected new life into the race for the title.

Canino delivered a stunning victory over Mhage Sebastian, a 51-move clash that showcased her strategic prowess. This win marked her third consecutive triumph, a remarkable turnaround after a shaky start to the tournament.

Earlier rounds had been unkind to Canino, squandering a winning position in the first round and then suffering a defeat. But the 2025 ASEAN Individual Championships silver winner has found her rhythm, returning to the form many expected.

The competition wasn’t without its upsets. Former national champion Jan Jodilyn Fronda faced Kate Ordizo in a fiery encounter, but ultimately succumbed to a 58-move defeat. The French defense proved to be her undoing.

Bernadette Galas also improved her standing, splitting the point with Vic Derotas in a 30-move Queen’s Gambit. The leaderboard is tightening, with players battling for every advantage.

The field remains competitive, with Kate Ordizo, Heart Padilla, Allaney Jia Doroy, and Cherry Ann Mejia still within striking distance. Each player understands the importance of every remaining game.

With nine rounds still to play, the pressure is mounting as these skilled chess players vie for one of three coveted spots on the team heading to the World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan this September. The competition promises to be intense, a true battle of wits and endurance.
