A hidden world of illicit gambling was shattered last month in Pennsylvania when police raided an illegal casino. The operation, concealed behind a false storefront, had been quietly fueling a surge of criminal activity in the surrounding neighborhood.
On January 28th, officers from the Lancaster Station’s Community Appreciation Team executed a search warrant on a location in the west 300 block of Avenue J-2. What they found wasn’t a legitimate business, but a clandestine gambling den known locally as a “tap-tap.”
The raid resulted in eight arrests: four individuals facing felony charges, including two with existing robbery warrants, and another four facing misdemeanor charges related to illegal gambling. Authorities seized five illegal gambling machines, effectively shutting down the operation.
These “tap-taps” are notorious for attracting more than just gamblers. They frequently become magnets for drug use, violence, and other serious crimes, disrupting the peace and safety of local communities.
Despite the persistent threat of these illegal operations, Lancaster County experienced a remarkable decrease in overall crime throughout 2025. A renewed focus on enforcing existing laws appears to be a key factor in this positive trend.
The most striking improvement was a dramatic drop in homicide rates. The county saw a historic low of just four criminal homicides in 2025, a significant decrease from the previous annual average of 10 to 20.
County Commissioner Josh Parsons emphasized that public safety is the government’s primary responsibility, and the recent statistics demonstrate a clear success. He attributed the decline to a combination of factors, including dedicated police work and federal enforcement efforts.
Lancaster County’s homicide rate now falls well below the national average for counties with similar populations, which typically range between 25 and 70 per capita. This remarkable achievement highlights the effectiveness of a multi-faceted approach to crime reduction.
Commissioner Parsons also credited the strong partnerships between law enforcement and the community. The successful raid on Avenue J-2 served as a powerful example of what can be accomplished when these groups work together.
The decline in crime isn’t simply about numbers; it’s about restoring peace of mind and improving the quality of life for residents. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement and the community are building a safer future for Lancaster County.
