A widespread recall has been initiated for several batches of popular infant formula brands Aptamil and Cow & Gate, sparking concern among parents nationwide.
The recall centers around the potential presence of cereulide, a toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus. This discovery prompted immediate action to protect vulnerable infants.
Specifically affected are various sizes of Aptamil 1 First Infant Milk, including 700g, 800g, and 1.2kg big packs, with dates ranging from July 2026 to January 2027.
Cow & Gate 1 First Infant Milk in 600g, 700g, and 800g sizes, alongside the 1.2kg big pack, are also included in the recall, covering dates from June 2026 to February 2027.
Additionally, certain Aptamil 1 Pre-measured Tabs and Aptamil 2 Follow On Milk products – in both 700g, 800g, 1.2kg and pre-measured tab formats – with dates extending into January 2027, are being removed from shelves.
Health officials have already received 36 reports of infants experiencing symptoms potentially linked to the contaminated formula. These reports originated across the UK, including England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Parents who have used these products are urged to be vigilant and monitor their babies for any adverse reactions. Immediate consultation with a healthcare professional – a GP or NHS 111 – is recommended if any concerns arise.
While only one batch of Aptamil First Instant Formula has been distributed within the UK, authorities confirm that additional affected batches are present in other countries, highlighting the scale of the issue.
The recall underscores the critical importance of stringent quality control in infant formula production, and the swift response aims to minimize any potential harm to the youngest and most vulnerable members of our communities.
This situation serves as a stark reminder of the need for constant vigilance regarding product safety and the importance of promptly addressing any potential health risks.
