Deep within the Kurdistan region of Iraq, a remarkable story of ancient coexistence is slowly being unearthed. Recent archaeological excavations at the Gird-î Kazhaw site have revealed compelling evidence of a time when Christians and followers of Zoroastrianism lived side-by-side, a testament to a religious landscape far more complex than previously understood.
The investigation, beginning in the late summer of 2025, centered on a building complex dating back to around 500 A.D. Initially, the purpose of the structure remained a mystery. Then, the discovery of five square pillars hinted at something extraordinary – a possible church, a beacon of early Christianity in the region.
Further geophysical surveys revealed a network of hidden walls beneath the surface, suggesting the “church” was part of a larger monastic complex. While direct evidence of Zoroastrian artifacts within the fortification remains elusive, researchers theorize a small military garrison stationed there likely adhered to the Zoroastrian faith. The coexistence wasn’t without its inherent tensions. Zoroastrianism, a polytheistic faith, sharply contrasted with Christianity’s monotheistic beliefs. Perhaps most strikingly, their burial customs differed dramatically. Zoroastrians believed the earth was sacred and avoided direct burial, instead utilizing rock-cut niches or vessels, while Christians traditionally buried their dead in the ground.
Despite these fundamental differences, evidence suggests a degree of mutual respect and adaptation. It appears these communities navigated their contrasting beliefs, acknowledging and even accommodating each other’s practices, even when they clashed with their own religious doctrines. This speaks to a level of tolerance rarely acknowledged in historical narratives.
Today, Zoroastrianism is practiced by approximately 100,000 people worldwide, a dwindling remnant of a once-powerful faith. The findings at Gird-î Kazhaw offer a rare glimpse into its past, a time when it flourished alongside Christianity in a region now largely defined by Islam.
