A relentless tropical storm, Basyang, unleashed devastating floods across Caraga and Mindanao, leaving a trail of heartbreak and destruction in its wake. The storm’s fury has already claimed at least twelve lives and shattered the lives of over 162,000 families.
The hardest hit region, Region 10, accounts for nine confirmed fatalities. Landslides proved particularly deadly, claiming four lives in Cagayan de Oro City and one in Iligan City, while investigators are still working to determine the cause of three more deaths in Iligan.
Despite the ongoing assessment, the official death toll has remained unchanged since yesterday, a grim indication of the scale of the disaster. Authorities are currently verifying reports of an additional death in Region 10, alongside three drowning victims reported in CARAGA.
CARAGA bears the brunt of the devastation, with over 110,000 families displaced from their homes. More than two thousand individuals are currently seeking refuge in fifty evacuation centers, desperately awaiting relief and a return to normalcy.
Region 10 is also reeling, with over 110,000 families affected and nearly ten thousand sheltering in fifty-four evacuation centers. The storm’s reach extended to other regions – Region 6, 7, 8, and 11 – impacting thousands more families.
Beyond the loss of life and displacement, the storm has left a landscape scarred by damage. Thirty-six individuals have been reported injured, all within Region 10, and initial assessments reveal ₱260,000 in infrastructure damage and 503 damaged homes.
Damage assessments are still underway, promising a more comprehensive understanding of the storm’s impact. The true cost of Basyang’s wrath is likely to be far greater than current estimates suggest.
In response to the crisis, over ₱82.5 million in humanitarian assistance has been distributed, providing a lifeline to those in need. This aid includes essential family food packs, ready-to-eat meals, and vital non-food items like hygiene kits, sleeping materials, and water containers.
The nation’s leader has pledged full government support for the affected areas, ensuring that victims receive the assistance necessary to rebuild their lives. The focus now is on providing immediate relief and laying the groundwork for long-term recovery.
