A plea for freedom, penned in desperation, has reached the highest levels of government. Mary Jane Veloso, a Filipino national facing a harrowing ordeal, recently released an open letter directly appealing for a presidential pardon.
The Palace responded with a call for formalization, urging Veloso’s supporters to channel the appeal through official routes. Officials believe a direct, documented request will allow the President to fully consider her case and reach a decision.
Veloso’s letter detailed the profound impact of her imprisonment on her family. She highlighted the declining health of her parents and the aching desire to reunite with her children as the driving forces behind her renewed plea.
The simple act of visitation has become an immense burden for her family, requiring arduous journeys of eight to ten hours each way. This physical and emotional strain adds another layer of hardship to an already devastating situation.
The case dates back to 2010, when Veloso was arrested in Indonesia with over two kilograms of heroin hidden within a suitcase. She maintains her innocence, claiming she was tragically manipulated into becoming a drug mule, a victim of circumstance and deceit.
A glimmer of hope emerged in 2024 when an agreement between the Philippines and Indonesia led to Veloso’s transfer to Filipino custody. She is currently detained at the Correctional Institute for Women, awaiting a final resolution to her fate.
