ABACA BOOM: Samar Farmers Unleash a Fiber Revolution!

ABACA BOOM: Samar Farmers Unleash a Fiber Revolution!

A quiet crisis has been unfolding in Samar, as the once-thriving abaca industry – a cornerstone of the region’s economy – has steadily diminished over the last decade. Production numbers have fallen dramatically, signaling a need for urgent intervention to safeguard the livelihoods of local farmers and restore a vital part of the island’s heritage.

Farmers in Calbayog City are now at the forefront of a determined effort to reverse this decline, participating in intensive training programs designed to revitalize abaca cultivation. These sessions aren’t simply about tradition; they’re about equipping a generation with the knowledge to compete in a modern market.

The training focuses on the entire lifecycle of the abaca plant, from meticulous planting material management to swift and accurate disease identification. Participants are learning to expertly extract fibers and, crucially, to classify them according to stringent quality standards – skills essential for securing better prices and expanding market reach.

Recent data paints a stark picture of the industry’s struggles. Abaca production in Samar has plummeted from 1,807 metric tons in 2010 to a mere 940 metric tons this year. The province’s contribution to the national abaca output has also shrunk, falling from 2.72% to just 1.45%.

A recent two-day workshop, a collaboration between the Calbayog City government and dedicated support from industry experts, provided a crucial hands-on experience for farmers. The program moved beyond the classroom, taking participants directly into the fields to practice identifying diseases and explore the city’s established abaca nursery in Barangay Gabay.

This isn’t a short-term fix, but a long-term investment in the future of Samar’s abaca industry. The goal is clear: to empower farmers with the tools and knowledge they need to not only restore production levels, but to elevate the quality of Samar abaca and reclaim its position in the national market.

The commitment extends beyond simply providing training. Experts are dedicated to the continuous transfer of innovative technologies and best practices, ensuring that these farmers are equipped to face the challenges of a changing agricultural landscape and build a sustainable future for generations to come.
