SNAP SCAMMER LOCKED UP: $325K Theft Lands Her Behind Bars!

SNAP SCAMMER LOCKED UP: $325K Theft Lands Her Behind Bars!

A brazen scheme, fueled by deception and greed, has landed a Minnesota woman in federal prison. Latasha Thomas, 39, received a year-long sentence for defrauding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) out of over $325,000, a calculated theft that exploited a system designed to help those in need.

The elaborate fraud unfolded over two years, orchestrated by Thomas alongside her daughter, Ambrosia, and another relative, Cynthia. They systematically acquired Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards – the lifeline for millions receiving food assistance – through a network of lies and forged documents.

At the heart of their deception were meticulously crafted fake Minnesota driver’s licenses. Each license bore a different false name, but featured a photograph of one of the three women, allowing them to repeatedly apply for benefits under assumed identities.

The Thomases didn’t stop at false identities. They preyed on the system’s vulnerabilities, falsely claiming to be pregnant women experiencing “high risk pregnancies.” This calculated claim, supported by fabricated doctor’s notes, was intended to inflate their SNAP allotments, maximizing their illicit gains.

EBT cards were delivered to an apartment in Roseville, occupied by Cynthia Thomas under the alias “Sofia Gold.” A search of the apartment revealed a trove of mail addressed to the various pseudonyms used in the scheme, solidifying the evidence against them.

Authorities discovered notes within the building’s mailbox, instructing mail carriers to redirect mail for the fake identities to Cynthia’s apartment. This level of planning demonstrated the calculated nature of their criminal enterprise.

The stolen funds weren’t simply pocketed. The trio actively marketed and sold access to the EBT cards, charging a hefty fee – typically 50 to 60 percent – for others to use the benefits. Customers would pick up a card, spend a portion of the monthly allotment, and then return it, perpetuating the cycle of fraud.

Latasha Thomas is now ordered to repay the full $325,159 to the United States Department of Agriculture. Cynthia Thomas received probation last year after being convicted of mail fraud conspiracy, while Ambrosia Thomas has agreed to plead guilty and awaits sentencing.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the lengths to which individuals will go to exploit government programs, and the dedication of law enforcement to uncover and prosecute such crimes.
