OLYMPIC BETRAYAL: Represent America or Get OUT!

OLYMPIC BETRAYAL: Represent America or Get OUT!

The image was stark: American Olympians, adorned in Team USA gear, publicly expressing embarrassment at representing their nation. This followed reports of uniformed soldiers voicing dissent against lawful ICE operations, each sharing a common thread – a voluntary commitment to serve and symbolize the United States.

The core issue isn’t disagreement with policy, a right afforded to every citizen. It’s the dissonance of criticizing while actively benefiting from the honor of national representation. Those who find U.S. policies objectionable retain the freedom to voice their concerns as private individuals, but that privilege shouldn’t extend to doing so while draped in the nation’s colors.

Snowboarder Chloe Kim, skier Hunter Hess, and figure skater Amber Glenn were among those who spoke out. Kim, drawing on her family’s immigrant story, advocated for open borders and an end to deportations. Hess confessed to “mixed emotions,” suggesting a willingness to relinquish his Olympic position rather than fully embrace representing the country.

Four female athletes in USA winter sports gear pose together, showcasing their team spirit and attire against a snowy mountain backdrop.

This sentiment reveals a desire to reap the rewards of American opportunity without accepting the accompanying responsibilities. Beyond immigration, objections arose regarding a presidential executive order affirming the biological reality of male and female, with Glenn intending to use the Games as a platform for LGBTQ+ advocacy.

The backlash was swift and polarizing. Former President Trump directly attacked Hess on social media, questioning his patriotism. Political figures across the spectrum weighed in, highlighting the deep divisions within the country. The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee acknowledged a surge in abusive messages directed at the athletes, but notably refrained from connecting them to the initial criticisms.

Adding another layer of complexity, Eileen Gu, an American-born skier competing for China, criticized the former President’s comments, lamenting the distraction from the Games. Gu herself had previously faced scrutiny for choosing to represent China, where she achieved Olympic success.

The controversy extended beyond the athletes themselves. Vice President Vance was met with boos and jeers during the opening ceremony in Milan, coinciding with protests targeting U.S. ICE agents providing security for American citizens. Initial media reports painted a picture of widespread Italian opposition, but the reality was far more nuanced.

Italy, like the United States, is deeply divided. The left-leaning factions, staunch supporters of open borders, vehemently oppose Trump and Vance. However, the right, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, generally aligns with the principles of national sovereignty and border control, mirroring the “America First” approach.

Meloni understands the strain placed on resources and the rise in crime linked to uncontrolled immigration, a reality reflected in Italy’s prison population. She has actively sought to address the issue, even proposing migrant processing centers in Albania, but faced obstruction from the European Court of Justice and Italian courts.

This struggle highlights the limitations imposed by EU membership on national border control, a cautionary tale for the United States regarding multinational systems that cede sovereignty to international bodies. Italy’s experience underscores the value of maintaining control over its own policies.

The situation at the Olympics boils down to a fundamental principle: representation carries responsibility. If an individual, whether in uniform or as an athlete, fundamentally rejects the values of the nation they represent, they forfeit the right to wear its emblem. The honor should be reserved for those who embrace it fully.
