A critical tradition in American governance is fracturing. The National Governors Association will forgo its customary formal meeting with President Trump, a decision stemming from a reported White House decision to invite only Republican governors.
The move has ignited a firestorm of protest, with the NGA’s CEO, Bandon Tatum, expressing deep disappointment. He emphasized the importance of bipartisan collaboration, stating the administration’s choice undermines a vital opportunity for federal and state partnership.
Tatum underscored the need for unity and constructive engagement, particularly in the current national climate. The NGA, he affirmed, will continue to serve all governors, regardless of party affiliation, focusing on delivering solutions for the American people.
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt, the current NGA chairman, informed fellow governors that the association would no longer facilitate the February 20th event. He stressed the NGA’s role in representing all 50 states, as well as the governors of several U.S. territories.
In a swift and unified response, Democratic governors across the nation announced they would boycott any White House events. The decision, spearheaded by the Democratic Governors Association, signals a firm rejection of what they perceive as a deliberate attempt to sow division.
The governors’ statement condemned the administration’s actions, accusing President Trump of creating chaos and prioritizing partisan politics over the needs of the American people. This year’s planned NGA meeting in Washington, scheduled for February 19-21, was intended as a forum for crucial discussions and collaboration. However, the White House’s actions have effectively derailed that opportunity.
The situation echoes past tensions, recalling a pointed exchange between President Trump and then-Maine Governor Janet Mills during last year’s meeting. The disagreement centered on the administration’s stance on transgender athletes, culminating in a direct challenge from Mills: “We’ll see you in court.”
That previous encounter foreshadowed the current impasse, highlighting a growing divide between the White House and Democratic governors. Mills, now a U.S. Senate candidate, represents a growing resistance to the administration’s policies.
