YOUR PHONE IS UNDER ATTACK! Scammers Are Relentless.

A relentless barrage of unwanted calls and texts is sweeping across Canada, disrupting daily life and leaving many on edge. New data reveals the average Canadian is bombarded with approximately five spam or scam communications *every single day*, totaling a staggering 1,800 per year.

The breakdown is unsettling: roughly 2.8 spam texts and 2.2 spam calls invade personal space daily. This constant intrusion has fostered a climate of distrust, leading nine out of ten Canadians to instinctively ignore calls from unknown numbers, bracing for the inevitable scam attempt.

Ontario bears the brunt of this digital harassment, with residents receiving an average of 6.4 unwanted contacts each day. Alberta and British Columbia follow closely behind, experiencing 5.8 and 5.7 daily spam attempts respectively. Even Quebec, experiencing the lowest rates, still averages 3.2 unwanted communications.

A new study by Preszler Law says the average Canadian receives around five spam or scam calls or texts every day, or 1,800 a year.

Certain cities are emerging as hotspots for these unwanted intrusions. Windsor, Ontario, tops the list with a concerning 6.8 daily spam contacts, followed by Edmonton (6.5) and Toronto (6.3). Ontario’s dominance is further underscored with four cities landing within the top ten most targeted areas.

Western Canada consistently reports above-average spam levels, with Vancouver, Surrey, and Calgary all experiencing significant volumes of unwanted calls. Halifax stands out as the sole representative from Atlantic Canada, highlighting the widespread nature of this issue.

The consequences extend beyond mere annoyance. A quarter of Canadians have already fallen victim to fraud or extortion schemes originating from these deceptive communications. The emotional and financial toll is substantial, with one in three Canadians knowing someone who has lost money to scammers.

The average financial loss for those victimized is a sobering $2,958. Tax-related scams are the most prevalent, accounting for 83% of reported incidents, closely followed by fake unclaimed government benefit schemes (68%).

Scammers are employing increasingly sophisticated tactics, including threats of unpaid fines and tolls, emotionally manipulative messages from supposed long-lost friends, and fabricated delivery notifications for packages never ordered. These methods prey on vulnerability and exploit trust.

The data, collected from a survey of over one thousand Canadian adults, paints a clear picture: the relentless wave of spam and scams is a pervasive problem demanding attention and vigilance. It’s a landscape where caution is paramount and skepticism is a necessary defense.
