SCIENCE FESTIVAL UNLEASHED: Edinburgh's Revolution Goes WORLDWIDE!

SCIENCE FESTIVAL UNLEASHED: Edinburgh's Revolution Goes WORLDWIDE!

This April, the Edinburgh Science Festival transcends borders, becoming a truly global celebration of discovery. From April 4th to 19th, the festival will explore science not as a collection of facts, but as a uniquely human story – a shared narrative woven through breakthroughs and, crucially, the lessons learned from failures.

The festival’s program, unveiled today, promises an extraordinary journey. Imagine hearing firsthand from Helen Sharman, the first British astronaut, recounting her pioneering 1991 mission aboard the Mir space station. Her conversation with Earth scientist Dr. Hermione Cockburn will offer a rare glimpse into the challenges and wonders of space travel.

Wildlife enthusiasts will be captivated by Hamza Yassin, celebrated for both his wildlife filmmaking and his recent triumph on Strictly Come Dancing. He’ll share thrilling tales from his adventures in the field with science presenter Siân Bevan, revealing the dedication and artistry behind capturing the natural world.

For families, the National Museum of Scotland will host “Science Festival Favourites,” a vibrant collection of hands-on experiences. Budding paleontologists can “Dig Up a Dino,” while aspiring detectives can test their skills in “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.”

Little scientists can also get delightfully messy with “Splat-tastic!” – a chemistry adventure culminating in homemade slime. “Mini-Medics: The Body Show” offers a playful exploration of human anatomy, and “The Rocket Show” makes the principles of space travel accessible and exciting.

“Tech Decoded,” a free drop-in event, will demystify the digital world, allowing visitors to explore everything from artificial intelligence to the fundamentals of coding. Families can even build their own electrical circuits, sparking curiosity and fostering a love for technology.

The festival will also honor the contributions of women in science with “First Women of Science,” a panel discussion led by former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. Astronomer Royal for Scotland, Professor Catherine Heymans, and author Janey Jones will join her in celebrating the remarkable achievements of female scientists past and present.

A captivating artistic installation, “The Great Instauration” by Dr. Gayle Chong Kwan, will transform the National Museum of Scotland’s Grand Gallery. Chong Kwan’s large-scale sculptures and prints are the result of months spent exploring museum archives, revealing the cultural and historical forces that shape scientific progress.

Exclusive viewings and artist-led tours will offer deeper insights into Chong Kwan’s work, while “Science Under the Lens” provides a hands-on experience for children, uncovering the hidden scientific history of Scotland.

The festival will also pay tribute to the extraordinary life and legacy of Dr. Jane Goodall, the renowned primatologist and conservationist who passed away in October 2025. Dr. Anthony Collins, who worked alongside Goodall for 55 years, and Jasmina Georgovska, Director of Outreach at the Jane Goodall Institute UK, will share their perspectives on her remarkable impact.

This year’s Edinburgh Science Festival isn’t just an event; it’s an invitation to connect with the universal human story of scientific exploration, innovation, and the enduring quest for knowledge.
