VAN ROOTSELAAR: The Shocking Truth Behind the Tumbler Ridge Massacre

VAN ROOTSELAAR: The Shocking Truth Behind the Tumbler Ridge Massacre

Six months ago, a young person named Jesse Van Rootselaar posted a haunting message online: “I’ve been pretty um, aimless.” The accompanying YouTube channel, now erased, carried a chilling description – “None of this makes sense.” The profile picture itself was a stark juxtaposition: an anime character alongside a rifle, all set against a cheerful pink and white backdrop.

Eight lives were brutally extinguished in the quiet, rural community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, on Tuesday, marking one of the deadliest shootings in Canadian history. Jesse Van Rootselaar, just 18 years old, was identified as the perpetrator by the RCMP. The tragedy unfolded with devastating speed, leaving a community shattered and searching for answers.

Four years prior, Jesse’s mother, Jennifer Strang, had actively promoted the teenager’s YouTube channel on Facebook, highlighting content focused on hunting, self-reliance, and firearms. This glimpse into Jesse’s online world, quickly removed for violating platform guidelines, now feels like a desperate, missed signal.

A parallel presence on TikTok, using the same profile image, revealed a disturbing pattern. The account repeatedly shared videos related to Audrey Hale, the perpetrator of the 2023 Nashville school shooting. This connection raises unsettling questions about potential influences and the dark corners of online radicalization.

The investigation revealed a horrifying sequence of events. The violence began at a home on Fellers Avenue, where Jesse allegedly killed her 39-year-old mother and 11-year-old stepbrother. She then moved to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, unleashing a second wave of terror.

Within the school walls, a 39-year-old teacher and five students – three 12-year-old girls and two boys, ages 12 and 13 – were fatally shot. Two others were critically injured and airlifted for emergency medical attention. The library and a stairwell became scenes of unimaginable loss.

Police had been called to the suspect’s home numerous times over the years, responding to concerns about Jesse’s mental health. Firearms had even been seized during one visit, only to be returned after a legal petition. Multiple times, Jesse was apprehended for mental health assessments under provincial law.

The most recent police visit, just this spring, stemmed from worries about Jesse’s deteriorating mental state and expressions of self-harm. Despite these repeated interventions, the tragedy unfolded, highlighting the complexities of mental health support and the challenges of preventing violence.

Jesse Van Rootselaar had dropped out of school four years ago and had no direct connection to any of the victims. She began her gender transition six years ago, a detail shared by authorities as part of the ongoing investigation. The layers of this story are deeply complex and profoundly sad.

Police arrived at the school while shots were still ringing out, facing gunfire themselves. Within minutes, they discovered Jesse deceased, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A long gun and a modified handgun were recovered at the scene.

Authorities determined Jesse’s firearms license had expired in 2024 and that she had no registered firearms at the time of the shooting. The investigation continues to piece together how she obtained the weapons used in the attack. More than 25 people were assessed for injuries, thankfully most escaping physical harm.

The discovery of the initial crime scene at the Fellers Avenue home was delayed. Police weren’t alerted to the deaths there until after the school shooting, when a neighbor reported seeing a young female fleeing the residence. The full scope of the tragedy slowly came into focus, revealing the devastating impact on two locations and countless lives.
