NETFLIX EXEC IN DAMAGE CONTROL: 'WOKE' CLAIMS EXPLODE!

NETFLIX EXEC IN DAMAGE CONTROL: 'WOKE' CLAIMS EXPLODE!

The cancellation of the Netflix drama *Boots* sparked immediate speculation, with some alleging the show was dropped due to backlash from The Pentagon over its queer representation. Claims circulated that the series was deemed “woke garbage” and unfairly targeted.

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos directly addressed these accusations, firmly denying any connection between the Pentagon’s criticism and the decision to end *Boots* after a single season. He insisted the cancellation was purely a business decision, driven by viewership data and cost analysis.

Sarandos explained that Netflix meticulously evaluates each show based on how engaged the audience is – do viewers finish episodes, offer positive feedback, and demonstrate continued interest? These metrics, he stated, are the primary factors in determining a show’s future.

Miles Heizer in BOOTS

Despite the difficult decision, Sarandos revealed he was personally a “fan” of *Boots*, acknowledging the emotional impact of canceling any series. He emphasized the heartbreak felt by the entire Netflix team when a beloved show is discontinued.

*Boots* held particular significance as the final project of legendary television producer Norman Lear, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 101. This added another layer of sadness to the show’s abrupt ending.

The series, starring Miles Heizer, quietly became a streaming success upon its October release, unexpectedly climbing Netflix’s top 10 charts. It told the story of a young man navigating a military boot camp while concealing his sexuality.

Shortly after its debut, The Pentagon issued a statement criticizing *Boots*, accusing it of pushing an “ideological agenda.” A spokesperson claimed the military welcomes diversity but condemned the show as “woke garbage” aimed at audiences, including children.

However, *Boots* was deeply rooted in reality, adapted from Greg Cope White’s memoir, *The Pink Marine*. The memoir detailed his personal experience as a gay man undergoing military training during the 1990s, a period defined by the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

Cope White himself responded to Sarandos’ interview, expressing gratitude for the inquiry into the show’s cancellation. His memoir and the series aimed to shed light on a previously untold story of LGBTQ+ individuals serving in the military.

Miles Heizer, the show’s lead, publicly shared his disappointment over the cancellation, thanking fans for their overwhelming support. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of a project that resonated so deeply with the LGBTQ+ community.

Heizer poignantly reflected on the personal significance of the role, acknowledging his own past fears about being gay and the profound impact of being embraced and uplifted by the show’s audience. He even joked about cherishing the label of “woke garbage” bestowed upon the series by The Pentagon.
