A former television host, now facing federal charges, vehemently defended his actions following a court appearance in Minnesota. The charges stem from an incident involving a church in St. Paul, an event he characterized as an exercise of constitutional rights.
Don Lemon pleaded not guilty to accusations of conspiring to violate religious freedom and violating the FACE Act, a law protecting access to places of religious worship. He, along with three others, was arrested last month in connection with what authorities describe as a “coordinated” disruption at Cities Church.
The indictment details a scene of deliberate obstruction. Lemon allegedly entered the church with a group, livestreaming the event as they occupied the main aisle and front rows, exhibiting what prosecutors termed “menacing and threatening behavior.”
According to the legal documents, Lemon and the group physically blocked congregants attempting to move within the church, effectively impeding their access and disrupting services. The incident quickly escalated, drawing significant attention and sparking a legal battle.
Leaving the courthouse, Lemon addressed a gathering of media, asserting his belief that his actions were protected under the First Amendment. He framed the charges as a politically motivated attack, a tactic of intimidation employed by the current administration.
“For more than 30 years, I have been a journalist – and the power and protection of the First Amendment has been the underpinning of my work,” Lemon stated, his voice resonating with conviction. He suggested the situation revealed a troubling pattern of behavior from those in power.
Lemon expressed defiance, vowing to fight the charges and refusing to be silenced. He portrayed himself as a symbol of resistance against what he believes is an abuse of power, drawing a parallel between his own situation and the concerns of those who supported him in Minnesota.
He insisted the legal proceedings themselves were intended as punishment, a deliberate attempt to stifle dissent. Lemon declared his unwavering commitment to challenging the accusations, promising a vigorous defense against what he called “baseless charges.”
