SHERIFF BOTCHED BILLIONS, NOW TARGETS ICE! (WATCH)

SHERIFF BOTCHED BILLIONS, NOW TARGETS ICE! (WATCH)

Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt recently addressed reporters with a sense of relief as “Operation Metro Surge” concluded, a federal enforcement effort launched in response to growing unrest in Minneapolis. She emphasized her office’s policies, stating they do not conduct civil immigration enforcement and that “nothing has changed.”

This declaration, however, resonated as a pointed rebuke of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Operation Metro Surge, spearheaded by the Trump administration’s border team, aimed to enforce existing federal immigration law and stabilize a region grappling with escalating public safety concerns.

Instead of acknowledging the federal intervention, Sheriff Witt framed the operation as a political burden, focusing on strained relationships and a perceived erosion of trust. Acknowledgment of the federal officers’ assistance during a volatile period, or recognition of the lawful basis for immigration enforcement, was notably absent.

Minnesota has been battling a wave of crises, extending far beyond traditional street crime. The “Feeding Our Future” scandal alone revealed a staggering $250 million scheme exploiting taxpayer-funded child nutrition programs, a brazen theft of public resources.

Further investigations into fraud within Medicaid and autism services uncovered systemic vulnerabilities, draining over $8 billion from public funds and casting a shadow over state leadership. These weren’t isolated incidents, but large-scale criminal operations that flourished under existing oversight.

True public safety encompasses more than just police patrols; it demands institutional competence and proactive enforcement across all agencies. Yet, as federal officers stepped in to deter violence and enforce immigration law, the sheriff’s response signaled division rather than collaboration.

Sheriff Witt’s insistence on maintaining a strict separation between her office and ICE may appease certain activist groups. However, it offers little reassurance to residents who expect a unified front in upholding the law at all levels of government.

While local agencies aren’t obligated to assume federal responsibilities, actively undermining lawful federal operations is a dangerous precedent. A consistent application of the law, rather than selective enforcement, is the cornerstone of a stable society.

The core principle of President Trump’s immigration agenda was simple: laws must be enforced consistently. The alternative, often presented as a more compassionate approach, has demonstrably fueled confusion, encouraged exploitation, and eroded public trust.

Sheriff Witt called for truthfulness and an end to “half-truths” from leaders. This standard must apply equally to her own statements. Given Minnesota’s recent history of billion-dollar fraud and recurring unrest, residents deserve a clear accounting of local leadership’s proactive measures.

A sheriff who acknowledges a “long road” to rebuilding trust must first address the reasons that trust was broken. Law enforcement cannot pick and choose which laws merit respect; a breach of security at a courthouse demands a response, just as the enforcement of immigration statutes does.

Minnesota needs less narrative management and more decisive leadership. It requires officials willing to defend lawful enforcement without apology and to confront systemic failures head-on. When federal officers act to prevent disorder, the appropriate response isn’t resistance, but partnership.
