ORCHESTRA'S FUTURE: SECURE IT NOW!

ORCHESTRA'S FUTURE: SECURE IT NOW!

Music possesses a unique power – it can be a lifelong devotion, a fulfilling career, or a cherished pastime. In the Philippines, opportunities for aspiring orchestral musicians are growing, and the Orchestra of the Filipino Youth (OFY) stands at the forefront of this exciting evolution.

Founded in 2012 by the nonprofit Ang Misyon, Inc., the OFY was born from a simple yet profound idea: to nurture the extraordinary talent hidden within young, underprivileged Filipino musicians. The program offers far more than just lessons; it’s a comprehensive journey encompassing intensive orchestral training, invaluable mentorship, and the chance to perform on stages both within the Philippines and around the world.

Just before their 2026 season opener,ELEVATE: Triumphs of Tchaikovskyat the Proscenium Theater in Makati, Mickey Muñoz, OFY’s executive director, shared insights into the orchestra’s mission. The core purpose, he explained, is to equip these young musicians with the skills and opportunities to build brighter futures.

This season features not only the grand Tchaikovsky concert, but also a major performance in August, complemented by intimate chamber concerts held in the Proscenium’s Black Box theater. This diverse programming is designed to hone the musicians’ skills and broaden their artistic horizons.

TheTriumphs of Tchaikovskyconcert was a stunning showcase of the orchestra’s capabilities, particularly within the exceptional acoustics of the Proscenium Theater. The venue’s carefully designed wood panels amplify the natural resonance of the instruments, creating a rich, immersive experience for the audience – a truly remarkable sound without the need for artificial amplification.

Under the direction of Maestro Gerard Salonga, the evening began with Alexander Glazunov’s suite inspired by Chopin, a tribute to the renowned pianist Lang Lang who had recently graced the Proscenium stage. The piece immediately highlighted the orchestra’s remarkable cohesion and artistry.

The performance then welcomed violinist Diomedez Saraza, Jr., a Juilliard-trained musician and national competition winner. His interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto was captivating, a dynamic conversation between his breathtaking solos and the orchestra’s powerful accompaniment.

While deeply rooted in classical training, the OFY embraces versatility. Mr. Muñoz explained that the orchestra has performed with a diverse range of artists, from Rama Hari at the Metropolitan Theater to Ballet Manila’s production ofFlorante at Laura, and even supported the popular BINI concert, demonstrating a commitment to youth empowerment.

“Our priority is classical, but it doesn’t limit what our musicians can do,” Mr. Muñoz emphasized. They’ve even lent their talents to the ABS-CBN Ball, tackling a repertoire of pop songs with the same dedication and skill.

Since 2012, Ang Misyon, Inc. has provided scholarships to over a thousand young musicians, offering them opportunities to perform in countless venues with the OFY and other orchestras. Currently, the orchestra boasts over 70 active members.

The OFY functions as a dedicated training academy, preparing aspiring musicians for professional careers. Many members are already securing positions with professional orchestras while continuing to perform with the OFY – a testament to the program’s effectiveness.

Initially established by the Lopez family to supply musicians for the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra, the OFY persevered even after the orchestra’s disbandment due to unforeseen circumstances. The commitment to supporting gifted, yet disadvantaged, young musicians remained unwavering.

Today, the OFY continues to nurture talent in individuals aged nine to 24, providing them with a foundation for both artistic and personal growth. Experiencing their performances firsthand is the best way to witness their remarkable progress.

The orchestra’s training regimen is rigorous and comprehensive. Scholars receive one-on-one lessons with professional musicians every Saturday, participate in sectional rehearsals, chamber groups, and ultimately, full orchestral performances. Transportation is also provided, recognizing that less than half of the members are from Metro Manila.

Many scholars hail from the provinces of Quezon and Rizal, areas with a strong tradition of marching bands, while others travel from as far as Cebu to participate. They often find the OFY training to be uniquely valuable, even while pursuing formal music education at universities.

While not every scholar pursues a professional music career, all retain a deep passion for music, and the OFY experience serves as a pivotal point in their personal development. This enduring impact is what drives Mr. Muñoz and the organization to continue their vital work.

“There’s a real hunger for this kind of training, for the discipline and teamwork that extends beyond the music itself,” Mr. Muñoz shared. “We’re incredibly grateful to be able to provide this opportunity to young people who truly need it.”

The OFY’s next concert, “Music for a Regenerative Future,” is scheduled for August 16th at the Proscenium Theater in Makati. Details regarding their chamber concerts at the Black Box will be announced in the coming months.
