SKI RESORT DEATH: Cover-Up Exposed!

SKI RESORT DEATH: Cover-Up Exposed!

A shadow fell over the slopes of Vorlage ski area after a devastating accident claimed the life of a 13-year-old girl from Ottawa. The tragedy unfolded during a school ski trip, leaving a community reeling and prompting an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

According to police reports, the girl’s hoodie became entangled in the chairlift mechanism. Despite the swift response of first responders, they were unable to free her quickly enough. A heartbreaking decision was made to lower her, still suspended from the cable, to the base of the hill where she was rushed to hospital, ultimately succumbing to her injuries.

The girl’s parents, in a statement released Sunday, expressed their profound grief and gratitude for the overwhelming support received from the community. They also extended their thanks to those who desperately attempted to save their daughter’s life.

On Tuesday, there were flowers and a stuffed animal left near the entrance to Centre Vorlage. A 13-year-old girl died on the weekend after an accident at the ski area.

Quebec’s regulatory body, the RBQ, immediately ordered the closure of all aerial lifts at Vorlage following the incident. Their investigation revealed “non-conformities” within the ski area’s operations, triggering a temporary shutdown while necessary corrections were implemented.

The focus of the investigation quickly turned to safety protocols, specifically operator training and the functionality of the chairlift’s emergency shutdown system. Investigators are examining whether the system, designed to halt the lift if a rider encounters difficulty, operated as intended when the girl became entangled.

Yves Juneau, president of the Association of Quebec Ski Resorts, emphasized the critical role of safety bars at lift off-loading areas. These bars are designed to automatically stop the lift if someone fails to dismount, a crucial safeguard that investigators are now scrutinizing.

Centre Vorlage is gradually reopening its operations this week after being cleared to do so.

Beyond the mechanical aspects, questions arose regarding the role of clothing in the accident. While warnings exist about securing scarves and loose items, the potential hazard posed by hoodies had not been specifically addressed. Ski resort officials are now considering whether additional guidance is needed to protect skiers.

Juneau, a veteran of the ski industry with 30 years of experience, expressed his shock. “Someone hanging from a chairlift is something I have never heard of,” he stated, underscoring the unprecedented nature of the tragedy. He extended his deepest condolences to the grieving family.

After confirming that all identified issues had been addressed, the RBQ authorized Vorlage to reopen its operations. The decision came only after rigorous safety checks and a comprehensive review of lift operator training procedures.

The chairlifts appeared to be running Tuesday at Centre Vorlage, but there were very few skiers on the slopes.

Longtime Vorlage skier, Christine Logue, described the eerie silence that descended upon the village after the accident. She recalled the constant maintenance of the lifts and noted that previous, older lift technology had been demonstrably more dangerous.

The tragedy prompted a reevaluation of safety measures beyond Vorlage. One Ottawa-based ski school, Snowhawks, already prohibited loose clothing like hoodies, a policy now being revisited by other organizations in light of the incident.

This tragedy echoes a similar incident from January 2023, when a six-year-old girl died after her coat became caught in a T-bar lift in Quebec’s Lanaudière region. That event led to a coroner’s call for a comprehensive review of training and safety practices across the province.

As Vorlage cautiously reopened its slopes, a poignant memorial emerged near the entrance – flowers, a stuffed animal, and a collection of heartfelt notes from Grade 4 students at a local Wakefield school, a testament to the profound impact of this loss on the community.

The investigation continues, seeking answers and striving to prevent such a devastating event from ever happening again. The memory of the young girl lost serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of unwavering vigilance and continuous improvement in ski safety protocols.
