Many commonly used IDs lack the crucial security feature of embedded chips, a standard found in passports, leaving them susceptible to forgery and manipulation. This creates a significant gap in security, particularly as digital transactions become increasingly prevalent.
The potential financial consequences are staggering. Projections estimate that synthetic identity fraud alone could result in losses exceeding $23 billion in the United States by 2030. While this figure focuses on the US, the global nature of fraud means the Philippines is not immune to these escalating risks.
Currently, institutions like banks in the Philippines accept a wide range of identification documents – around thirty different types – for account opening. However, the varying levels of security among these documents create a challenge in establishing trust and verifying the legitimacy of applicants, especially in remote settings.
Smart ID cards, equipped with embedded chips or RFID technology, offer a powerful solution. These chips securely store personal data, prevent unauthorized access, and enable robust authentication processes. They act as a digital fortress, safeguarding against alteration, cloning, and fraudulent use.
Fortunately, the Philippine government is taking action.
