YEARS LOST: Brother's Tragedy Fuels Demand for CRACKDOWN!

YEARS LOST: Brother's Tragedy Fuels Demand for CRACKDOWN!

February 18th. The day my younger brother, Christian, should have turned twenty-two. It feels impossible that it’s nearing four years since a senseless act of violence stole him from us on the streets of Chicago. He’d just graduated, brimming with potential, and carried a dream of UCLA. We even walked those campus grounds together, imagining his future.

That future was brutally extinguished on June 24, 2022. He was simply standing with friends when a black SUV appeared, and gunfire erupted. Fifty shell casings marked the scene, a horrifying testament to the speed and brutality of the attack. Three were rushed to the hospital; only two survived. The police called it “wrong place, wrong time.”

But that phrase has echoed in my mind for years, a chilling reminder that in some places, there *is* no right place, no safe time. A stray bullet can find its way into any home, any life. And tragically, little has changed since Christian was taken from us. The randomness, the sheer senselessness of it all, continues to haunt our family.

While national crime statistics may fluctuate, the reality in cities like Chicago remains stubbornly grim. Last month alone, 123 people were shot. This isn’t a political debate; it’s a national epidemic, a crisis that tears apart families and communities. For us, the ache of loss is compounded by the lack of justice.

I’ve been given a platform, a voice, and with it comes a profound responsibility. I refuse to let Christian’s memory fade, to let his story be dismissed as just another statistic. His life mattered, and the lives of so many others lost to violence deserve to be remembered.

My book, “The Day My Brother Was Murdered,” is a testament to that commitment. It details our family’s journey through unimaginable grief, but it also honors eight other innocent individuals whose lives were stolen on the very same day as Christian’s – strangers from different backgrounds, different walks of life, united only by their tragic fate.

This isn’t about race or any single demographic. It’s an American crisis, impacting every community, every family. It’s a shared tragedy that demands our collective attention and action. The common thread isn’t who they were, but that they *were* – innocent lives extinguished without reason.

Driven by this urgency, I helped establish the Caldwell Institute and Caldwell Foundation for Public Safety. Our mission is simple: to confront violent crime honestly, to address its root causes, and to prioritize the needs of victims and their families. We believe a fundamental shift in policy is crucial.

Across the country, well-intentioned policies have inadvertently tilted the scales of justice, granting more rights to criminals than to those they harm. Weak enforcement and a lack of accountability have emboldened repeat offenders, leaving law-abiding citizens vulnerable and fearful. The consequences are devastating.

We believe in honoring victims not just with remembrance, but with resolute action. It means demanding leadership that prioritizes public safety, that holds offenders accountable, and that understands the real-world consequences of policies that allow violence to flourish.

Christian should be celebrating his twenty-second birthday today. I can’t bring him back, but I can dedicate my life to fighting for a future where fewer families experience the unbearable pain we endure. America must confront this crisis now, before more birthdays are missed, more futures are stolen, and more families are left with unanswered questions.

We owe it to Christian, and to every victim of violent crime, to do better. To demand better. To *be* better. Their lives deserve nothing less.
