Golem Grad island in North Macedonia harbors a startling imbalance: a severe shortage of females. In some areas, nineteen males exist for every single female, creating a breeding ground for desperate behavior.
Sixteen years of meticulous data collection revealed a disturbing trend – a rapid decline in the female tortoise population. Ecologist Dragan Arsovski began to investigate, suspecting the cause lay within the tortoises’ own mating rituals.
The reality was brutal. Females were not simply being outcompeted for mates; they were being relentlessly pursued, harassed, and physically assaulted. Multiple males would swarm a single female, a chaotic and violent struggle for reproduction.
Researchers observed males bumping, biting, mounting, and even violently poking fleeing females with their sharp tail tips. A shocking number of females bore injuries to their genitals, evidence of the constant aggression.
Faced with this unrelenting pressure, some females choose a horrifying escape. They walk off the island’s cliffs, a desperate attempt to avoid unwanted advances, even if it means certain death.

Experts predict a grim future for the tortoises of Golem Grad. Current trends suggest the last female on the island will perish around the year 2083, a chilling example of a self-inflicted “extinction vortex.”
