A surge in applications marked January for the country’s service and repair enterprises, with the Fair Trade Enforcement Bureau receiving nearly 500 renewal requests.
The bureau demonstrated increased efficiency, approving 118 renewals – a significant 23% jump compared to the previous year’s 94 approvals. This indicates a growing commitment to formalizing and regulating this vital sector.
These accreditations aren’t merely bureaucratic hurdles; they’re rooted in Presidential Decree No. 1572 and the Consumer Act of the Philippines, designed to protect consumers and ensure quality service.
Maintaining current accreditation is crucial for these businesses, allowing them to operate legally, demonstrate trustworthiness, and keep their information current with regulatory bodies. Timely renewal avoids penalties and maintains operational authority.
Alongside renewals, the bureau also processed new registrations, approving six out of 51 applications submitted through the Integrated Registration and Information System portal.
The accreditation process is an annual requirement, with validity extending to December 31st, and renewals due by January 31st to avoid late fees. This consistent cycle ensures ongoing compliance.
A wide range of businesses fall under this accreditation umbrella, encompassing critical services like motor vehicle repair, machinery maintenance, and the servicing of complex systems – from electronics to medical equipment.
Last year’s enforcement efforts highlight the importance of this regulation, with over 400 inspections conducted and more than 200 businesses receiving notices for operating without the necessary DTI certification. This underscores a proactive approach to consumer protection.
