A desperate plea for reconciliation in Bangkok spiraled into a brutal confrontation, leaving an American man dead. Stein Heath Cole, 54, traveled to Thailand seeking to rekindle a lost romance, but instead found himself at the center of a violent struggle fueled by jealousy and family disapproval.
On February 16th, Cole approached his former girlfriend, 24-year-old Nan Phawt Ar Cho, hoping to win her back. The encounter ignited a chain of events culminating in a deadly attack on Monday afternoon, involving her current boyfriend, Saw Nay Lin Oo, 26, and three other men.
The confrontation erupted outside a shop in Bangkok around 4:30 p.m. Cole reportedly arrived armed with a 10-inch kitchen knife, initiating the physical altercation. What began as a heated argument quickly descended into a savage beating.
Police discovered Cole lying on the pavement, his legs broken and his body bearing five stab wounds. A metal pipe and the knife he carried were found nearby, grim evidence of the ferocity of the attack.
The four men – Saw Kyaw Win Tun, Saw Kyaw Htunt Paying, Thien Oo (the ex-girlfriend’s brother), and Saw Nay Lin Oo – now face charges of jointly assaulting another person, resulting in death. One of the suspects himself sustained a stab wound during the chaos and required hospitalization.
Authorities believe the tragedy stemmed from Cole’s inability to accept the end of the relationship. He had allegedly been persistently following his ex-girlfriend, unable to move on from their broken connection.
According to police superintendent Colonel Sonchai Poonphol, the suspects claim they didn’t intend to kill Cole, but reacted in the heat of the moment after he brandished a weapon. The situation, they allege, quickly escalated beyond their control.
Cole had been living alone in an apartment directly across from the shop where the attack occurred. His presence was reportedly a source of tension for the woman’s family, who disapproved of the relationship and had actively tried to separate the couple.
Investigators describe Cole as a man prone to aggressive outbursts and heavy drinking. Previous confrontations between him and the woman’s relatives had already occurred, foreshadowing the tragic events that unfolded. He was unemployed and renting a room in the building.
The U.S. Embassy has been notified and is assisting with the case. The investigation continues, piecing together the details of a relationship gone tragically wrong, and a desperate attempt to reclaim a lost love that ended in violence and death.
