Trump lauds 'piece of work' Jesse Jackson at 'sold-out' Black History Month event

The White House echoed with a surprising tribute this week as President Trump, during a Black History Month event, remembered Jesse Jackson as a “real hero.” The acknowledgment came just a day after the civil rights icon’s passing, a moment of reflection amidst a gathering meant to celebrate Black American achievements.

Trump spoke candidly about Jackson, acknowledging his complex personality. He described Jackson as “a piece of work,” but quickly followed with praise, emphasizing his inherent goodness and heroic stature, drawing applause from those assembled.

The event itself was notable for its attendance, described by Trump as a “sold-out crowd.” He pointed to the ongoing renovations in the White House ballroom, suggesting it could have accommodated even more people eager to participate in the commemoration.

This wasn’t the first expression of grief from the former president. Trump had previously lamented Jackson’s death on social media, expanding on his sentiments Wednesday by noting their relationship had deepened over time. He observed that, unlike many acquaintances, his connection with Jackson grew stronger with each passing year.

Trump recalled Jackson as possessing a unique blend of charisma, determination, and street smarts. He remembered knowing Jackson long before his time in office, recognizing a special quality that set him apart.

Jesse Jackson, 84, left behind a monumental legacy. He had bravely stood alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the tumultuous 1960s and later founded the influential Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, dedicating his life to the pursuit of civil rights and equality.

The President characterized Jackson as a vibrant and compassionate individual, a “force of nature” whose absence would be deeply felt. He extended heartfelt condolences to Jackson’s family on behalf of everyone present.

The Black History Month event also served as a platform to highlight economic progress made during Trump’s administration. He also used the occasion to reaffirm his intention to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Ben Carson, his former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

Trump emphasized the significance of the Medal of Freedom, describing it as the nation’s highest civilian honor, second only to the Congressional Medal of Honor. The announcement underscored a moment of recognition for Carson’s contributions during Trump’s first term.
