Sandro Tonali is attracting significant attention from footballing giants like Arsenal and Manchester United, but his current club, Newcastle, is reportedly resolute in their valuation – a staggering £100 million.
The Italian midfielder is entering his third season at St James’ Park and has quickly become a pivotal figure. Former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given believes Tonali’s recent performances, particularly his two-goal display against Aston Villa, are a clear indication of his exceptional talent.
Given sees a player capable of anchoring a team for years to come, hoping Tonali can ignore the swirling transfer speculation. He emphasizes the importance of Tonali remaining focused, as Newcastle views him as a potential cornerstone for future success.
“He really stepped up at Villa Park,” Given observed. “He’s a special player, truly talented. There’s been a lot of talk from his agent, a lot of noise, but I hope he stays. He reminds me of Pirlo – he makes everything look effortless.”
Tonali’s ability to seamlessly blend defensive duties with attacking contributions sets him apart. He possesses a rare composure on the ball, constantly scanning the field and making intelligent decisions, a quality often lacking in traditional holding midfielders.
“He breaks things up well, but he also offers so much more,” Given continued. “He’s relaxed, reads the game brilliantly, and does all the things you need from a number six. The fans adore him; you could genuinely build a team around someone like Sandro.”
Recent rumors prompted Tonali to visibly reaffirm his commitment to Newcastle with a passionate goal celebration during an FA Cup victory. He later explained the celebration was a release after a seven-month scoring drought, and a gesture of appreciation for his strong relationship with manager Eddie Howe.
“People spoke about our relationship, but I work every day with the gaffer, and our relationship is perfect,” Tonali stated. “We try to do the best for this team, every game.”
Since joining Newcastle, Tonali has made 96 appearances, playing a crucial role in their Carabao Cup triumph last season. Despite a ten-month ban stemming from betting regulation breaches impacting his initial season, he has quickly established himself as a key player.
Tonali’s current contract extends to June 2028, with an option for a further year, but his agent, Giuseppe Riso, has indicated that a summer evaluation of his future is planned. Riso acknowledged Newcastle’s reluctance to sell and Tonali’s current attachment to the club.
“Newcastle is having a hard time letting go of Sandro, and he wants to lead the club into the Champions League,” Riso stated. “These transfer discussions will take place later.”
