ARSENAL'S TITLE DREAM: COLLAPSING IN REAL TIME!

ARSENAL'S TITLE DREAM: COLLAPSING IN REAL TIME!

The air around Arsenal has shifted. Just weeks ago, a Premier League title seemed destined for the Emirates. Now, a chilling question hangs over North London: are they on the verge of another agonizing collapse?

A recent 2-2 draw against bottom-dwelling Wolves perfectly encapsulates the unraveling. Leading 2-0, they surrendered the advantage, a result that could prove devastating as Manchester City close in. A single win for City in their game-in-hand would shrink Arsenal’s lead to a mere two points, erasing a potential nine-point cushion squandered earlier in the season.

What went wrong? The summer transfer window, once hailed as a resounding success, now appears deeply flawed. Highly touted arrivals like Viktor Gyokeres have struggled to adapt, looking a shadow of the player who excelled elsewhere. Eberechi Eze, despite his Premier League pedigree, hasn’t found his footing within Mikel Arteta’s system.

The choices made in the market seem increasingly questionable in retrospect. Players like Bryan Mbeumo and Antoine Semenyo, available at similar prices, now appear to be superior alternatives to the signings Arsenal ultimately made. A missed opportunity to bolster the attack with talents like Hugo Ekitike or Benjamin Sesko looms large.

Beyond recruitment, Arteta’s management of the squad is under scrutiny. Despite a deeper roster, key players like Jurrien Timber and Martin Zubimendi appear fatigued, overworked while viable alternatives like Ben White and Christian Norgaard remain underutilized. This lack of rotation has even impacted Eze, who has seen frustrating spells on the bench.

The defensive solidity that once defined Arsenal has evaporated. They conceded only three goals in their first ten league games, flirting with a historic record. Now, 17 goals have leaked in the subsequent 17 matches, a stark and worrying decline. Injuries have played a role, but the shift is more profound than mere misfortune.

Mikel Arteta, David Raya, Gabriel Magalhaes, and Viktor Gyokeres

A curious element contributing to this defensive vulnerability is goalkeeper David Raya. While capable of spectacular saves, Raya seems prone to conceding spectacular goals – long-range efforts that defy expected value. Opponents are finding an unusual degree of success with low-probability shots against Arsenal.

The statistics are revealing. Six of the 19 goals conceded this season have come from shots with an extremely low chance of scoring. This pattern suggests a potential weakness in Raya’s positioning, anticipation, or reflexes, raising questions about his contribution to the team’s struggles.

But perhaps the most damaging factor is a creeping sense of nerves. Is Arsenal “bottling” the title, succumbing to the pressure of a long-awaited opportunity? While past collapses were attributed to injuries or simply being out of contention, this season feels different.

They had a golden chance to establish a commanding lead, but faltered in crucial matches against Liverpool and Manchester United, displaying a fragility that belies a title-winning mentality. Arteta has publicly urged his players to relax and enjoy the race, but the tension remains palpable.

The toughest fixtures are largely behind them, the squad is nearing full strength, yet conviction seems to be lacking. A nagging mental block, the fear of squandering everything, threatens to derail their season. The question now is: can Arteta reignite the fire before Manchester City inevitably seize control?
