A Nebraska Senate candidate is facing intense scrutiny over the flow of campaign funds – directly to his family. Dan Osborn, running as an independent, has channeled nearly $250,000 to his wife and her political consulting firm, raising questions about the true nature of his campaign.
The financial arrangements span both his previous unsuccessful bid and his current run for Senate, with over $370,000 distributed among his wife, daughter, and sister-in-law. These payments originate from both Osborn’s campaign coffers and his affiliated political action committee, the Working Class Heroes Fund.
Recent disclosures revealed six payments totaling roughly $19,000 to Osborn’s wife, Megan, between April and June alone. One veteran Nebraska political strategist bluntly stated the situation “stinks,” drawing a contrast to similar arrangements within established parties.
The scrutiny deepened with the discovery of over $100,000 funneled to a political consulting firm co-owned by Megan Osborn. The firm’s connection to the candidate was initially obscured, only coming to light after inquiries from the press.
While changes to FEC rules in 2023 aimed to level the playing field for less affluent candidates, critics question the qualifications of Osborn’s wife, a former restaurant manager, to justify the substantial payments. She has received at least $246,000 from the campaign and the Working Class Heroes Fund.
Osborn defends the arrangement, stating both he and his wife dedicate long hours to the campaign. He argues that running for Senate as a working-class individual requires unconventional measures to compete with wealthier, established politicians.
Beyond his wife, Osborn’s daughter, Georgia, received $4,200 for “assistant services” following his first campaign. His sister-in-law, Jodi, was paid $1,400 for “treasurer services” and also serves as Treasurer for the Working Class Heroes Fund.
Adding to the complexity, Osborn’s claim of independence is being challenged. He has accepted significant support from the Democratic Party, including utilizing their fundraising platform, ActBlue, and endorsements from prominent Democrats like Senator Elizabeth Warren.
Further controversy surrounds Osborn’s campaign staff, including the hiring of an individual with a history of anti-police activism. The firm responsible for creating his campaign advertisements also has ties to numerous Democratic candidates and progressive causes.
The consulting firm co-owned by Megan Osborn has also worked with Democratic candidates, including a Senate hopeful in Iowa, raising further questions about the candidate’s true political alignment and the source of his campaign’s financial support.
