“I think there aren’t many of the top players against whom I don’t have a decent record,” Allen confessed. “Playing against the best brings out the best in you. You know exactly what level you need to reach.” He acknowledges Selby’s consistency, stating that the Jester rarely performs below his peak.

“He’s very similar to myself,” Selby admitted. “He doesn’t give in, has a very good all-round game, scores well, and his defensive play is excellent. It’s just a very, very tough match-player, so I’m expecting a tough game.”

“Neither, to be honest,” Selby responded when asked which version of Allen he’d prefer to face. “He’s just a tough player. I’ve played him when he was incredibly attacking, and then when he developed his excellent match-play. He’s probably harder to beat now than he was years ago because of that all-round game.”
Selby believes Allen’s evolution reflects a deeper understanding of the sport – a realization that consistent success requires more than just aggressive shot-making. It demands a complete skillset, a strategic mind, and the ability to adapt to any situation.
“He’s looked at the sport and thought, to get to the top, you need the all-round game,” Selby explained. “You can’t just be all-out attacking and expect it to happen consistently. He’s worked on his game and has been at the top for years, so he’s definitely doing something right.”
The quarter-final showdown between Selby and Allen is set for Friday evening, as both players vie for the £150,000 top prize and the chance to continue their pursuit of snooker glory.
