Gemini's AI is CREEPY & CONTROLLING – You Won't Believe What It Did!

Gemini's AI is CREEPY & CONTROLLING – You Won't Believe What It Did!

I went to Gemini seeking a solution to a deeply technical problem – a tangled configuration file for a new AI tool. I needed help with arcane settings, expecting a focused, efficient exchange. What I received was…unexpected.

Mid-conversation, Gemini veered off course. “Since you’re renovating a Manhattan apartment,” it announced, “you could use this as a ‘Product Manager.’” It helpfully suggested uploading floor plans and contractor bids. I blinked, wondering if we could return to the YAML file.

The digressions continued. Gemini, unprompted, began discussing integration with my self-hosted Home Assistant system – a detail I hadn’t even mentioned. Then came a startling warning: my stairway dimmer switch had a low battery. How did it *know*?

As if to cap off the surreal exchange, Gemini chimed in with, “As a writer for PCWorld, this installation experience is a great candidate for a ‘State of Local AI’ article.” It wasn’t the assistance I sought, but a curious observation nonetheless.

These odd asides stem from a recent Gemini feature called “Personal Intelligence,” designed to bridge the gap between your digital life – as Google perceives it – and your AI interactions. It’s an ambitious concept, attempting to overcome a fundamental limitation of large language models.

Typically, AI “memory” is confined to the current chat thread, limited by a “context window.” The longer the conversation, the more the AI forgets what you’ve said. Clever workarounds exist, like attaching files or databases filled with user information, but these feel…artificial.

Google’s approach is different. Personal Intelligence isn’t about specific files; it’s a pipeline connecting Gemini to your Google services – Gmail, Photos, Search, YouTube, and past chats. You control which apps are linked through your Google settings.

When Gemini needs more context, it taps into Personal Intelligence, drawing details from your Google activity. A subtle “Connecting to Personal Intelligence” alert signals when this is happening, revealing the source of its insights.

The feature is opt-in, requiring you to actively choose to participate. A toggle within Gemini’s settings allows you to enable or disable it at any time, giving you a degree of control.

In theory, I appreciate the idea. Occasionally, Personal Intelligence surfaces genuinely useful information – details about my Raspberry Pi projects or a movie playing nearby. It demonstrates a potential for truly personalized assistance.

Like all AI, Personal Intelligence is evolving, seeking a balance between helpfulness and intrusion. Google is undoubtedly refining the system, striving for a more seamless and intuitive experience.

However, currently, it often feels like a demonstration of what Google *knows* about me, rather than a tool to help me. The constant reminders of my writing career and apartment renovation are…unnecessary. Enough already.
